Behind you... Naked!
Hopefully be a simple one for someone to answer...

My LAN, is a nice and simple affair...

One Modem Router, with main PC ( XP64 ) directly connected to the Router, one cable going to the Lan Room, and on to a switch, and then on 4 more PCs, and a WAP.

Now, some of the PCs are XP, some are 2K and a couple are linux.

Not a worry so far.

Each and every PC can see each and every other PC.

I can get any PC to have full access to any other PCs files, and thats all cool.

The snag is, that I have decided that since I got Vista Business and Ultimate sat here doing nuffin, that I will actually go ahead and use one, and this is where my issues have started.

First of all, and I have no way to explain this, but when the Vista PC tried to access the internet, it disconnected the router??? - yeah, go figure that one, cos I cant, but its doing it....

Anyway, thats neither here nor there for the time being... It an be due to a number of things, even just dumb plain bad timing.

What I really need to know is that when I am trying to get any PC to access the folders on the Vista PC, I am asked for a username & Password.

The problem here, is that no matter what I enter, it just wont accept it.

I just cannot get access to the Vista Folders.

In Vista itself I have given full R/W Access to everyone, I dont have a Password setup and ity wont accept my username or Administrator or... Well, anyhting I try?

Any clues?

vista's networking is totally crap. it takes my machine 30 mins when its entered desktop to aquire an ip address from the router. with xp it was instant.

dunny why they had to mess with the networking side when everything was working fine with xp.

My XP is instant, and Vista is slower ast Aquiring its IP but not slow enough to worry me...

I wouldn't say its totally crap just yet though... Its got some new and often irritating ways, but I'm sure that they will prove to be good once I get my head round them... ( I'm hoping anyway )

I will say though, that so far, Im totally unimpressed by Vista.

I originally bought Business, and recently my mum got me Ultimate and so Im kind of forcing myself a little, but on a rarely used PC... I hope I do get to like it, but as it stands, its poor compared to XP, the only thing its got is that it looks like Linux now that its got the Stolen Aero theme.

no problems here using vista networking. :)

silly question but you have turned off "password protected sharing" in the vista network control panel..??

Ok, so you are ok with it? - Cool.

Have I?

No, I have not.... I will have a look in a few and see what happens ok?

Thanks.

EDITTED BIT:

As I said though... I am trying to access my own user account and the Administrator, but nothing will let me on... I hope this will sort that out?

in your first post, you said you had given read/write access to "everyone"? therefore you won't even be prompted for a password.

Your right... But I am.

I can see the Vista PC there in the WorkGroup Computers... Along with the other PCs as I expect.

But if I try to connect to it, I get asked for a password.

Right, hang on... I have just got back from taking the kids to my mums and I have not had the chance to check out the network settings you mentioned... I will go up right now and have another play...

Gimme 5 minutes!!!

Nope... Just checked your settings...

PASSWORD PROTECTED SHARING is OFF

Still getting asked for the Username & Password.

Next thing to try?

Ok hang on...

Right then, where are we???

Ok, well thast a really long winded way to get my PCs to access the Vista PCisnt it?

I went through all that, followed it EXACTLY to the letter, and...

[Dibley=ON]

Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes, errrr.... No! - its the same

[Dibley=OFF]

I view WG Computers, Im now only running 2 to make things as basic as I can, and both this one here ( XP64 ) and the Vista PC ( Annoyingly up 2 flights of stairs and a set of step-ladders ) are both showing up

I click on the Vista PC and I still get asked for my username and password.

I have piddled about with a few things, some stuff is obvious, some not so, and I eventualyl got bored, shut BOTH PCs down for a minute and started them back up.

I left them alone and went back to view the WG PCs on the XP PC and saw these 2 there.

I DC'ed on the Vista PC and it opened up.

Was that you?

Was that me?

Who cares I think its running thats the important bit???

I will see what happens now over the next few restarts and see what gives?

Many thanks friends.
