So..installed Vista, but can't get a net connection.

I set the IP static address (192.168.6.5), its detected the network and picked up the router/gateway, but just won't get anywhere further. Red 'x' through the internet, and the diagnostic thing doesn't work.

Any ideas?

You dont happen to have 2 NICS on your computer and have plugged it in to the wrong one?
2nd one is disabled in bios(so wouldn't show as connected to a network at all).

Add network to trusted zones in the firewall?
Always have the windows firewall off, I use a hardware one with NATS.

Something I wasn't sure about, what 'type' of network I should select, as thats a new Vista feature. I set it as a private network.

It could well be, if Vista uses something different from what I'm used too, but the other computers in my house (2 Ubuntu, 1 XP) work fine.

networking in vista is the same as xp really. as you're using a static ip, i guess you've set the subnet mask, default gateway and preferred dns server as well? you must have as you already have xp machines running? :p

Yup. The settings are exactly the same on all computers (other then the final digit of course).

Vista IP: 192.168.6.5
Vista Sub: 255.255.255.0
Vista G/W: 192.168.6.1
Vista Dns: 192.168.6.1

XP IP: 192.168.6.10
XP Sub: 255.255.255.0
XP G/w: 192.168.6.1
XP Dns: 192.168.6.1

Ubuntu IP: 192.168.6.20
Ubuntu Sub: 255.255.255.0
Ubuntu G/w: 192.168.6.1
Ubuntu Dns: 192.168.6.1

I'd let vista autoconfigure the connection via dhcp. Will eliminate an error that your just glancing over and not seeing.
