Anyone have any ideas why Vista (x64 Home Premium) won't read CDs or DVDs with data on them?

'Computer' doesn't see a disk in the drive, and trying to open it results in it ejecting the disk and asking me to insert one.

I have no issues with blank disks, and x64 XP reads all disks without any problems, so I assume my drive is working fine.

Try going into Device Manager, right click IDE channel it is on and uninstall it, reboot which will install it again and see if that cures it.

If not, go back into Device Manager->DVD/CD-Rom driver->right click same optical device->Uninstall, reboot etc....:)

It worked.

Thanks :)

*edit*

Scratch that. As soon as I booted up a VMWare VM I lost it again. Changed the drive it uses to a virtual drive and all is well again.

does it show an exclamation mark in device manager next to it?

if so, search the windows forum for "exclamation mark" and use my thread
