Vista "Not Responding" after being idle

I've had a look round the net for an answer to this issue and it would seem I'm not alone although I've not been able to solve it. I've not got high hopes but thought I'd try here in case there is anyone that can help.

My system is in the sig and it runs fine. I recently went from XP to Vista so its a relatively clean install, games run great and I dont actually have any problems when I'm using it.

The issue surfaces when I leave my PC running idle for any length of time of more than about 20mins. When I return, any application windows that are open are frozen where mouse clicks don't do anything and the pointer changes to the spinning circle when moved over a window. The title bar for the window changes to "Not Responding" and sometimes it'll turn white although the text within can still be read. I can still move the windows about and the second hand on the desktop clock is still ticking but I can't shut down any of the windows.

If I then click on the pearl button (formally start button in XP) it opens the drop up window and then that freezes in the same way, with the spinning circle pointer - my only option is to do a cold reboot by pressing the reset button.

I've seen that Vista can be a bit flakey when it comes to its sleep mode, but I'm getting this even with all the power saving options disabled. I've also checked event viewer and there is nothing I can find that gives any clues.

Any ideas anyone?

no idea, when vista sleeps and comes back i cant see my other drive , data drive, and have to reboot :/

I have probelms with vista sleep or hibernating as well, I just turned it off lol

I've only encountered this once, switched pc on when i got home from work but had to do other things so hadn't touched anything/moved mouse etc for a good 40-50mins, when i came back to pc nothing would run properly. Was fine after i rebooted though, never happened since.

Thanks for the replies - as mentioned the event logger doesn't show anything significant and I've turned off sleep mode.

What I'm currently thinking is that I have a USB hub in my monitor, I'm wondering if its something to do with the USB devices being reactivated after being idle thats causing this?
