I am considering upgrading from XP Home Edition to Vista Home edition in a few months. I am currently running this spec:

3.1ghz P4 single core
1gb DDRII 667 RAM (soon to be upgraded to 2GB)
7900GS (not really relevant but pfffft :p )

would my current spec run Vista well? Should I wait until I get the 2gb of RAM or just buy vista now?

it will be fine as it is. 2gb will be handy though when you can get it. The rc1 runs sweeeet on my system with 1gb of ram.

Worked fine on a low-end Sempron laptop with 512mb RAM when I was testing RC2 (that was with throwing all manor of applications at it to test compatibility). No aero due to the dodgy integrated graphics though.

Vista's memory management is so much more efficient than XPs - it tends to cache things in RAM as much as it can, but does make for a much slicker system. Start up is surprisingly fast - much faster than an equivalent XP when you've installed everything.
