I have a two disc drive XP system where drive C has programs and drive D has all the data, music and photos. I plan to do a clean install of Vista on drive C and leave D as is so that I can copy all this data to drive C. Will Vista recognise my XP formatted data drive D or will it be lost during the install?

Thanks

So I will:

a) still take a backup of unbacked-up D data
b) copy what I require to C
c) format D in Vista format
d) copy data back to D from C

What is the difference between the two formats?

Wait, which drive has xp on it now? Thought you meant it was on the c drive. And you wanted to replace xp with vista?

I should have said

a) backup bits on D
b) put Vista on C
c) copy some of D to C
d) format D to Vista format
e) copy back bits on C (from D) to C

Ah :) You won't need to format d: for it to work in vista. Unless you want too.

I would backup anything you need on the c drive to the d drive.
Format and install vista on C and then copy the data back.
Job done.
