Vista or Windows 7?

Hey guys,
I'll be reformatting 2 partitions in about 1-2 weeks; one with XP and the other with Vista x86.
And then i'll be installing just one OS, and i'm not sure which one to install.
Vista Ultimate x64 or Windows 7 x64.

Which one do you think i should go for people?
And if you could give some explanation with it, not just 'vista' or 'windows 7', it'll be much appreciated :)

Main factor is stability and performance. Will be installed on the pc in my sig.
And how much more space does Vista Ultimate take up compared to W7?

Edit: This is the main home PC, but i'm pretty much the only one who uses it, so any major differences to get used to is not a problem.
I'll be using it for everything, web browsing, work, music, movies, etc, but mainly gaming.

Well, W7 is still RC, and, whilst it is very stable and polished for an RC it is still just that, and RC, and as such is liable to bugs and errors plus you'll only have it for a limited time when you'll be forced to buy the real deal or your machine will keep rebooting every two hours.

Vista Ultimate??? Please, I wouldn't bother. Home Premium is more than enough for most peoples needs and with SP2 available now might be what you need until W7 gets to RTM.

Or, dual boot.

+1

7 is still a RC. Vista Home premium would be more than good enough for you by the sound of it.

I'm running W7 as my main OS :p I do have Vista x64 elsewhere on the system though. Tbh W7 is still buggy and not as perfect as Vista x64 for day to day usage.

as others have said win7 is great but you will have to wipe it and start over again at some point anyway, vista home prem will do you

Well W7 won't have rebooting every 2 hours til March 2010 correct? So that aspect i'm not worried about.

I'm not dual booting because i don't need 2 OS's and i need to save the precious little space i have left :P
And yeah i know.. hard drives are as cheap as chip nowadays but i don't want to get another one, hence just installing one OS.

I've already got Vista Ultimate, so that doesn't matter either. Just wondering though, does Ultimate take up a lot more space than Home Premium?
And what additions does Ultimate have over Home Premium?

But basically you're recommending Vista for now, until the proper W7 comes out?

Win 7 RC is a fine stable OS and I recommend using it, but either XP or Vista x64 Home Edition should be used as your main OS simply because not all programs (namely Punkbuster) support Windows 7 yet.

I would have a play with W7 but use Vista as the main OS, perhaps dual boot as someone already said. W7 is too buggy and incompatible to use as a main OS, but OK the have a play with.

well i've just moved from vista 64 to win 7 -

win 7 is fantastic even though its RC

assuming the hardware and software you have will work with win 7 then i dont see any harm in trying it out.
im glad i did

I'm so fussy about my OSs that if one single thing doesn't work properly, I have to reformat and go back to what I was using before. I haven't had this problem with W7. It runs like a dream and feels just like the finished product. Perfectly suitable for a day-to-day OS.

But...err...Punkbuster? :D

Stick with Vista now, and if you must play about with windows 7, dual boot it, which is what i've done. Windows 7 is great, but it's not ready yet. Driver support for some devices in particular is not as good as vista for obvious reasons, and many programs still have issues. Couple that with the fact that there are almost certainly bugs that haven't been found yet (by us, maybe not MS) and that it expires, there's little point to run it as a main OS. It's not ready yet, hence RC.

Vista as of today, post sp1 in fact, is great. We already know it works fine and has no serious issues, as well as being widely supported, plus you can keep it indefinitely and still play with W7 on another partition or even a VM if it's supported.

i would agree with this, i find it more stable than Vista!! I don't use punkbuster so not bothered by this and so far it's found all the drivers for all my gear so i'm not sweating over that either. So for me at least it's actually a more finished product at this point then Vista ever was. All the bugs and crashes that i suffered with vista have vanished. It will be my main OS until March next year where i'm sure by then some bright spark will find a why to extend the life of it until the release day.

Bugs with Vista
* 50% of the time it reboots 30's after i wake up from sleep mode and login
* Same when starting up the pc from off
* Sometime (rarely admittedly) BSOD
* 50% of the time it crashes completely a few seconds into any MKV file and screen goes black (This is my biggest annoyance as i watch a lot of US TV in high def)

So far none of this has happened in W7

Kl. Thanks everyone for the info/advice :)
I *think* i'm just going to install Vista though.
Reason being is that although many people don't have bugs with W7, some people still do. And a game that i play uses punkbuster, so yeah.
I find that most people who say switch to Window 7, are people who have had bugs/problems with Vista, and therefore going to W7 (agreeably smoother/better performance), will be a fresh start, without having as many problems as they did with Vista.
However, i have no major problems with Vista, and once tweaked a bit after installation, it's a great OS, albeit a resource hog. So i'd rather go with a more established OS, that i know works for me, period.
But thanks again for everyones comments :)

So am I but I have got Vista installed as a back up solution. So far Win7 runs everything I need without any errors or problems, also its not much that I do on my system, play WoW, run Ventrilo, Skype, watch movies, download torrents, listen to music etc. Seems to be very stable and runs tons better than Vista for me.

That sounds more like a hardware problem, and the movie thing sounds like either bad files or some buggy software somewhere. I doubt that Vista is to blame tbh. When was the last time you did a clean install? Also you probably don't have many win7 issues yet as you've probably been using it for a lot less time than vista.

Got to say again though, windows 7 is looking very promising, the main improvement for me is the speed and responsiveness over vista. The only bug i've had recently in vista was folders changing customisation options, though I think that was fixed a while back. I can't fault vista x64 for stability and relibility, with a variety of programs.
