Vista or XP

with regard to graphics card? or the OS?

aside legal stuff, don't u have a copy of XP on your Old/Current system? can;t you just install that. Long as the 2 pc dun come on at the same time and both pinging MS then I think your copy will remain valid. (ppl will tell me off now)

Not shure on that one myself but its certainly something I could look at as a dual boot option if I have too many issues now that I have decided to go Vista :)

if your saying install the same xp/key on both pc's, no you can't...

so he should buy both XP and Vista, then dual boot them, and just use XP for gaming etc... as Vista is crap, no sense at all, he may as well just buy XP on its own and save some cash.

You need a decent 3D card like baseline at something of X1600 or what. Otherwise your basic windows won't even run smoothly cos the fact that its so graphically demanding. (which i think it's even a bigger con) The more windows u open the more graphical power u got to supply, i think thats a correct correlation, correct me if i am wrong.

Anyway I won't be upgrading Vista AT ALL or until Software runs out of support for it ^^

That's wrong. I am running a X800XT and my Vista Ultimate is running very smooth. My Dad is running it on a 6800GT and again, very smooth. I did a test with a old Geforce 4 5700Le and Windows Aero was smooth, only games wasn't. (Obviously). So no, even a lower GPU will run the Windows Vista theme perfectly. ;0

anyway NiteMare as a ATI card so there will be no problems playing games in vista....

have u triad vista? i don't mean the batas . vista is faster then xp. i've had vista since 26 january i have had no problems with it... as for playing games that isn't vista fault, it's the drivers fault. ATI as got the drivers now for vista that the games will run as fast as xp runs them..

Erm, I am running a X800XT 256MB card along with 1Gb Ram and AMD A64 3400+ CPU - yet Vista plays games a lot slower then my XP Professional was. Running the 7.2 drivers?

well im using the 7.2 drivers in vista too and the speed is the same as xp.. on some games the speed is abit faster then xp..

No I am not saying you're wrong or anything. I am just trying to see if there is a problem with my system, that's all.

Is there any reason why my proformance would be lower? running a SATA raid setup on a nforce 3 150 as well. 2x160 = 298Gb. Would that cause it do you think?

i don't think its your raid setup but u could try installing vista on a single sata drive... sometimes when using a ati graphic card on a nforce motherboard u will get problems.. i had a nforce 4 motherboard with a ati card before but i had a lot of problems with it. so i bought a ati motherboard then ive had no problems...

Thanks for all the feedback

I placed the order this morning and should all be here tommorrow and bonus I have the day off work :D (although I am putting a new fence up so might not get a chance to do much apart from check the parts!)

I went for Vista 64 bit in the end so I will report back when everythings working (hopefully :p )

Well, my XP setup on same machine ran 110%, so I don't see any real reason why it is doing this to me. I will try it on a single drive, I doubt it will make much difference though.

Thanks anyway, Gareth.
