Vista or XP

What annoys me about Vista is that too many people it brand it a "brilliant OS" and "the dog's..." when it patently isn't. Not yet at least. A flashy (and may I add pointless) interface does not make a good OS. On the other hand, compatibilty, speed, lack of bloat, efficiency, useful new features, ability to customise and efficiency most certainly does... Vista is lacking in all of those departments as far as I'm concerned. Shame the much vaunted Win-FS never materialised.

Hey Wang Computer, I disagree with you their :p. Their are a lot of people out their that are too quick to brand Windows Vista as the worst Operating System ever created, which is far from the truth. You may not like it (Not aiming that comment at you by the way, just a general comment :)) because you may have compatibility problems or slow transfer rates etc (Which I am sure will get fixed very soon) however this does not make Windows Vista a bad Operating System, far from it actually.

I half heartedly agree with you about the Interface does not make a good Operating System however it certainly makes it much nicer to use as a whole. Its not pointless at all in my opinion, as people that are interested in computers, we will be more critical than the average user weather that be about hardware or software. Now how about the average home user, now put yourself in their shoes and what would be the very first thing you would comment on as soon as you logged into Windows Vista? Now from that perspective, the User Interface and design is far from pointless.

Now as far as, what makes a good Operating System, in my opinion this would include the user interface, features, usability, speed, reliability, stability and security. For me Vista ticks most of these boxes, it runs fast and very smoothly, I am extremely impressed with the stability, reliability and security of Windows Vista and in my eyes is head and shoulders above Windows XP. :)

Have you tried turning off "Remote Differential Compression"?

I found it helped both my LAN and HD-HD transfers massively. :)

tried everything under the sun, besides trying a different lan controller, maybe i'll give that a go

I can confirm that the SP1 Beta will solve the network problems (but being a Beta, it'll probably throw up a few more random other problems too).

It is a closed Beta, but I'm sure the more creative members here would have no problem finding it elsewhere...
