Right, I've seen a lot of people here with Vista and the rest with XP. There are arguments for and against both OSs but I'm wondering, is there an advantage that Vista has over XP that will make it worthwhile switching over?

The only gripe with XP I have right now is the inability to detect all of my RAM.

It depends on what you do with your machine (what's the spec btw)?

If it's just about detecting RAM then it's probably not worth switching over if your system works fine as it is. If you're a gamer or whatnot then the change might be benificial esp with DX10

I do play a fair few games, that could be a plus for me. I think I just more worried about the software I use and whether or not Vista versions exist. It seems like people are hanging back with XP because of this reason and some of the software isn't being made for Vista because so many people are hanging back. Or am I just delusional? :p

Specs:
-Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 LGA775 'Wolfdale' 3.00GHz (1333FSB)
-Abit IP35 Pro (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
-OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-6400C4 800MHz Reaper HPC Enhanced Bandwidth Edition Dual Channel DDR2
-BFG GeForce 8800 GT OC 512MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express)

With XP, only 3GB of the OCZ is picked up. Not a huge problem right now, but it's nice to be able to use everything I've paid for ;)

More importantly what about your other hardware? I didn't go to Vista for ages because of the Creative issues and the fact that Netgear didn't properly release drivers for me dongle. I ended up using the hacked drivers and selling my dongle when my new motherboard came with inbuilt Wifi (sweet, they should all do this).

Have a read of this thread too.

Somebody also made a very good point in that it's probably worth backing up - dual booting/ trying it.

I mean I have 4GB 8800 series, Creative setup and I have had none of the issues described.

Got a Canon multifunctional dealy and sometimes I run an external harddrive. Had a quick look and there seems to be drivers for them. May look at getting a copy of Vista then ;)

Burnsy, you thwarted my plan :(

I've not had to read any of his posts for a while now :o

..

int, either get vista home premium 64 (or business if you need remote desktop and don't want MCE in there), or get xp 64

basically don't bother with ultimate :p

..

if you do get vista, then disable the defender real-time scanning, and use tweakuac to set the uac warnings to 'silent', and do all windows updates, including SP1

Vista is a lot more greedy for RAM anyway so you're just as well off with 3GB under XP as 4GB under Vista, arguably.

i just did a screenshot and put a red mask on it, it's hard to see forum screenshots within forums usually :)
