Hi all

i have windows vist home premium 64

im the only user of the pc and as such dont need a password when logging onto the pc.

however i will soon be visiting a LAN and dont want any old person to be able to turn the pc and start using it so would like to set a log on password for the pc.

i can see how to do this in the user accounts section all fine.

howver after the lan i dont really want to have a password i want windows to be able to just boot up as normal.

so the questions is, after setting a password can you go back to no password? as i think it only shows an option for new password?

if it is possible how do you do it?

thanks all

Simply click (in user accounts) "Remove my password". Job done:)

Yeah i'd just do this. Then you won't need to bother with a Windows password.
I'd use a BIOS password in addition to the OS password, not instead of. BIOS password won't be any use once the machine is up and running.

If I was going to a LAN with people I didn't know attending then beforehand I'd clone my drive, then format the drive and install a minimal OS with games but with none of my personal files. Once I was back from the LAN I'd restore the backed-up image of the machine.

Just a format?

One of the l337 LAN dudes may decide to break out the heavy artillery ; a disk editor. :p

To be honest, if you're going to a LAN i'd set a password at BIOS level aswell.

Last time I checked a BIOS password was easily bypassed by clearing the CMOS, and with the propensity for nice fat thumbscrews these days makes it next to useless, unless of course things have changed or you lock the case with a decent lock.

running without a windows password is a bad idea

easy to schedule a task with no password via a bat file! (ie a virus type one)

hmm well i think i have a password for when you try to enter bios, but it doesnt prompt you to enter a passy to boot up the pc.

is the bios passy your mention somthing different?

i will set one in vista and see about the remove my password thing.

regarding case security that someone mentioned, my side panel is secured with a nexus locking screw, i also have one of these holding my GTX280 into the case, for just incase.

also there are about 9 ppl who i trust going all sitting together so we will hoepfully be looking out for each others hardware.

thanks so far

is that auto login a setting that can be turned on and off?

so u can change it between needing a password and not needing one?

sorry for the continued noobie questions
