Hi,

Last night I finally got around to clicking that damn icon in the task bar about new updates to install. It offered Vista SP1 and I took it. It wanted to reboot but I was using the PC so left it to reboot overnight.

Come downstairs this morning and the Vista theme has gone completely only to be replaced with the old 2K style interface.

Can't see any way of changing it back - any clever ideas?

Looked into GFX drivers but they are apparently up to date.

Spec is:

Opty 165
2GB RAM
7800GT
DFI Ultra-D mobo

Not that the spec will help much but hey :)

This is how to turn it off, so you should be able to reverse engineer this to turn it back on again

Open Appearance Settings by clicking the Start button
GetOpenContent.aspx
, clicking Control Panel, clicking Appearance and Personalization, clicking Personalization, and then clicking Window Color and Appearance. If the Appearance Settings dialog box is not displayed, at the bottom of the page, click Open classic appearance properties.

i had a similar issue with a graphics card driver problem. i found that if you refresh the index rating it resolves it.

hope this helps.

Nope on both counts I'm afraid

However on the mandatory reboot as I dared to click the mouse it said that the theme service is not running.

I'm guessing that might be the problem here - how can I fix that? :)

Start button, type administrative tools, open services and scroll down to themes, double click on it and select "start" then make sure start up type is set to automatic.

I don't even know if you can do this in Vista, but did you have the Vista equivalent of a patched uxtheme.dll?

I'd have assumed had it overwritten the old file (which is where I'm going) then you'd still be able to select Aero, but it's worth ruling out.
