Vista problem - cant connect to internet

I've been working on XP for a few weeks now because I have been using some apps I haven't installed on Vista yet. I've pretty much finished using them now so I want to go back to Vista, problem is I cant access the internet. Well, saying I can't is a bit of a fib because I can sometimes, maybe one in every 5 attempts.

I don't think it's a router issue or my wireless network adapter because they work flawlessly on XP, and like I say, it sometimes works fine in Vista.

When I boot into Vista it can see 2 or 3 wireless networks in range but neither of them is mine. I've tried using the repair option but no luck. The only thing that seems to work is reboot it a load of times.

Any ideas what could be wrong?
Thanks.

IMO it is likely to be either a firmware issue on the router or a driver issue on your wireless network card.

Vista may use different networking protocols from XP hence the need for software upgrades.

What is the router, what is the wireless network adapter?

The router is a Netgear WGT624v3 and my adpater is a Linksys WUSSB54GS.
The thing I don't understand is that for the first 6 months or so the internet worked fine (on vista I'm talking about), and I've still got the same drivers/firmware that I had back then.

I've had the same problem with my Vista X64 and wireless card a few times - every time I've found rebooting my router (Billion 4204VGO) has fixed the problem. I upgraded the firmware last week and so far the issue hasn't come back.

It's sounding like it could be a router issue as I've just moved back into my house as I'm back from uni and after 5 restarts its worked everytime.

I've now moved back to my house at uni (the one with the netgear router) and the problem has come back. Again its only a problem on Vista, works fine with XP. It looks like its definately something to do with the router. I've upgraded the firmware to the latest version but still got the problem. Any ideas?

Thanks.

i had the same problem with my vista laptop. My Xp Pc, ps3 and mobile phone all connect fine but the laptop only worked intermittently. Finally figured it out and it was whenever my phone (n95) was wirelessly connected to the router at the time the laptop was switched on. For some reason if my email or web browser on my phone was still connected it would some how block the wireless signal to the laptop. I'm sure there's a more technical explaination but i now just make sure my phone is not connected before i boot the laptop, if i forget i disconnect the phone then reboot the laptop. Works perfectly every time as long as i do that.

Edit: oh and the laptop also has an xp install on another partition and whenever i boot that up i haven't had any connection problems.

Thanks delbuenno, but I'm afraid I don't have anything else connected to the router, neither does anyone else. The symptons you're describing are exactly the same as I have though. Maybe its something else I'm missing.

The router is a Netgear WGT624v3
My brother recently ordered a PC from a competitor with Vista on it.....he managed to connect wirelessly twice from a dozen attempts. He sent the machine back as it was faulty and got a replacement from OCUK. He's getting the exact same problem.

We use the same router as you and both use Netgear USB network adaptors. It works fine for my PS3, N95 (which is hardly ever connected), my XP machine and his old XP machine.....but try to get Vista on there and you'll be pulling your hair out for hours. I've tried everything I can think of. His last proposal was getting those network things that work along the electricity cables. I have no idea how they perform, though.

I hope someone comes up with an answer for you, so I can try it too!

Yea I know what you mean. I'm ok with computers but when it comes to networking and such all it ever does is make me angry.

It's just odd the fact that it worked on Vista for so many months with no problems, and without me changing anything (to my knowledge) its just packed up.

Have you installed SP1?
Because my D-Link usb wireless plays up a bunch now.
I have to unplug it from the usb then plug it back in for it to work ok.

I think its something to do with prerequisite update KB938371.
Do a google " vista sp1 usb problems "
