Vista problems: Windows update, Win explorer, Win installer

Recently I've had repeated error messages about certain windows processes crashing e.g. "windows update has stopped working"

It seems to affect windows update, windows explorer (i can view folders/files but if view add/remove programs it crashes) and windows installer.

Every time they're run they stop working almost instantaneously. I suspect it's because of a conflict with something i've installed but i can't figure out what, and even if I could I wouldn't be able to uninstall said program because windows installer won't work!

I've tried booting in safe mode with no programs running and the errors still occur.

I'm running Vista HP with spec in sig. Vista is installed to a 50GB partition C: and files/programs are installed to a separate partition D: (~686GB), with the left over space given to partitions for ubuntu. I know I could probably re-install to fix this but I really want to avoid that if at all possible!

Here's what's shown in the event viewer for one of the program crashes:

Any ideas on what to do would be much appreciated!

ok, so a bit of a shameless bump, surely someone has some idea what might be wrong?!

....if not, does anyone know a good way of reinstalling vista but in such a way i won't need to reinstall programs on the d: drive? Would I need to backup and restore the registry somehow?

Have you tried a simple system restore, don't choose the recommended one choose the earlier option and go back a couple of restore point's and see if that works.

Yeah i did and it had no affect. It was only a few back though, i might try going back to as far as it's got and see what happens...
