Hi guys i know there is a thread like this floating around some where but i cant find it using the search button! What i would like to know is what processes should i stop in Task manager just to give me that extra tiny boost when playing games?

Thanks :)

I assume you've disabled indexing and bit defender?

If so, then trimming the services any further won't give you any extra in-game FPSs tbh.. they're set to run with a very low priority, and on an E6600 you just wouldn't notice the extra 0.05% performance increase. imo :)

Thats because Indexing (Windows Search in Vista ) aint in there and Windows uses Windows Defender not Bit Defender.

You would need stop the services and Disable (set to manual) them in Admin Tools / Services section.

You don't need to really disable anything else extra other than Windows Defender and indexing oh and Windows Firewall if you are behind a router.

It's normal to have 60-70 processes running during everyday use.

Upgrade to 4GB of Memory and get Vista 64 and forget about doing anything to services.

A hardware Firewall (Router) does not do the same job as a Software Firewall, you should still use a Software one if you have a Router.

Pretty much exactly what I was going to say.

EEP! I have 95 running when I start up!!!!

I'm running vista business 64bit and I've disabled a few startup applicatons like itunes. Is this really abnormal to have so many running?

You'd only really require a software FW if you're unsure about your machine(s) and want to know if an application tries to connect - outbound connectivity wise of course since inbound will be done on any FW anyway. Or if you want to control the software making outbound calls.

It's purely a user choice, my choice is what I stated as I know my systems inside out and don't want or need a software process running which is of no use to my machines but others prefer to have software too for the re-assurance factor.

Yes it is completely abnormal.

This is mine after startup for contrast:

So have you removed a lot from the startup list to have that few then? I did a clean install about a month ago and I'm pretty selective with what I install. I'm not one to download loads of random apps etc.

Hmmmm, might have to have a further prune them. I was hesitant to cut anything that I wasn't sure of what it did. There are a few items like JavaTM platform 6, I take it if i cut this from the startup list that this will not cause problems?

You have a GTX and a dual core CPU. I doubt you really need a slight boost in games. Throw some more RAM in and get Vista x64 as said above.

Please explain, i have both running and am interested to know why you say this?

Thanks

Rich

Well just keep both running, no matter what anyone tells you.

And thats no matter how smart they think they are.

I have 70 running, most are tiny things I chose to install to make life easier and each takes a tiny amount of Memory.

I stand by my input about getting more Memory and rid of the 32bit OS, then you do not need to mess about cutting things down.

:) I trimmed a few out and was down to 73 at startup, but then I thought it was silly and turned most of em back on. It's not like my computer takes ages to start up or has problems running any software so why mess about!
