Right folks, my PC has just packed up with some DLL error and I can't spend the time on fixing it as I need the PC for Thursday for uni work thus instead of faffing with XP i've decided to purchase Vista.

I have some questions:

1) I have a 64bit Processor, would I benefit from getting the 64bit version over the 32bit version?

2) If I install on one hard drive, would I be able to keep data on a second harddrive, plug it in after install and get the data from it?

3) Would the Basic edition be good enough for web browsing, gaming and working or would I need the Premium version?

4) How come OcUK can sell for £48 and a high street purple shop for £100+?

5) Would I have it by tmrow (Thursday? :p)

1) There's no real reason not to get the 64bit version.

2) Yes.

3) I don't really see the point in the basic version, you may as well get premium for Aeroglass etc

4) Different licenses. There is a huge price difference between OEM, Upgrade and FPP (Full Retail)

5) I don't know about that one :p

Just ordered the 64bit premium with a new HDD. Order went at 1403 so hopefully get it tmrow, we'll see and hope. Thanks for the quick reply chaps.

1.) Not that I know of. Although it's more 'future-proof' than 32-bit I guess.

2.) Yes.

3.) The basic misses out on a lot of the stuff that makes Vista Vista. You may as well stick with XP unless you're getting a proper version of Vista.

4.) Depends on the type of license your purchasing. OEM is for system builders and ideally for one time installations. Retail is the full license and allows you to reinstall the software as many times as you like as long as it's on one machine.

5.) Depends on the time of the order. As you were half an hour late, I reckon no.

Yes which in most cases is one time installations. Most people reinstall their copy of Windows after upgrading/buying a new machine, rather than just on a whim.

I really hope you have a better experience than me. I decided to get Windows Vista home premium, worst thing i ever did. After installation i've done all updates for both drivers and windows vista. I'm constantly suffering from 'MEMORY_MANAGEMENT' blue screens and games like LOTR Online run for around 2 mins before windows cries and dumps the game, says its looking to see if it can find a solution to the problem then does nothing at all.

In my opionion Windows Vista is as criminal as the very first Windows release which as most of us 'Clued up' people know did not work properly and Mr Gates dishonestly steered the software around the bugs to get funding.

Windows Vista is not only a beta but its a bad one at that. I must be a glutton for punishment to put up with this rubbish. Worst thing is i paid £100 for the troubles. More lining to Gates dirty pockets.

I'm not saying you'll have the same problems, it may run fine for you. I'm just sick to death of p*ssing about with this so called operating system to try to get it to run

XysteR you sound a bit pathetic I'm afraid.

It is very likely that most of the issues you are seeing are driver issues which are of no fault of Microsoft. Most manufacturers haven't yet built drivers to work with Vista.

Did you run the Vista compatability test prior to upgrading to Vista?

Is your computer hardware working correctly? Have you run memory tests and checked your hardware is working? etc.

Why does everyone who is disgruntled with Microsoft products have a snip at Bill Gates? He's not the only one that works at Microsoft.

I've installed vista on a number of machines now (both upgrades and fresh installs). Yes there have been a few niggles and issues but on the whole I've had a good experince with it.

Yeah i know.

All devices new and 'Vista compatible'

Yup i was ripped into buying it when the marvelous 'Vista compatability test' said YES! you can install it!

Ran mem tests and done numerous hardware tests. Installed XP Pro, ran for 1 week without a shutdown, worked fine.

This is true but i can't refer to anyone between me and microsoft. The only conversation i've ever had with a microsoft employee was someone from india when i was activating an earlier version of windows. I'll refer to Mr Gates as just 'Microsoft' in the future.

Thats good for you and i'm genuinely glad that some folk have no problems. The problem i have with Vista is far too many people are having very similar problems that never get sorted out. I know people who enjoy gaming and simply can't anymore as it causes Vista to crash. I know a lot of people who have bought Vista and have very similar problems as me with both new and older hardware. The only reason Vista was released when it was was money. We the consumers shouldn't have to suffer for release deadlines.

Arrived within' 24 hours of the order being placed yesterday. Installation was quick and the new hard drive is nice and quick and has LOTS of room :D.

Loving Vista at the moment. Very nice interface in my opinion. Only issue is that sound is only coming out of one speaker?

Sounds like sound drivers. If you haven't already, check your manufacturer's website for updated drivers. As Vista went RTM in October-ish, the inbuilt drivers are o-l-d.

Maybe also check your speaker connections and sound options in control panel?

all 'vista compatible' means is that the manufacturers have complied to MS' standards in order to put the sticker on and has nothing to do with whether the product works with vista or not

Too right.

Logitech G15 - Vista compatible.

Drivers? You have to bodge it with the XP ones, which gives partial functionality and errors.

That is a bit naughty really. I would have thought vista compatible would equate to full compliance (including drivers) with Vista.
