Hi all. I just had a window apear in vista that told me i had an rcp virus on my pc, it told me to instal and run an up to date virus scan. As i already had avg instaled i tried that, it found nothing. Still a little concerned i downloaded avast and tried that as well, it also found nothing. Is vista telling me fibs??

I downloaded instaled and updated spybot s&d...........it also found nothing.
Think i will give adaware ago.

Im sure it was from windows, just opened problems reports and soloutions and one entry says- virus alert microsoft detected the rpc virus on your computer.

Windows does not have a built in virus scanner. TBH this looks like a web popup as gamesaregood has suggested, especially as it asked you to install a virus scanner. Vista should know that you have AVG.

sigh..

disable system restore

run....
ccleaner slim
nod32 antivirus
adaware se
spybot s&d
avg antispyware

Dont install two real-time AV applications on top of each-other... eg: Avast on top of AVG, it can screw your system and reduce protection. Just use one good AV scanner. Kaspersky 7 can be had for pittance... and will make AVG look like crap (because it is).

Post a Hijackthis log for us to look at if you like.
