Hi, looking to get a cheap PC for home and have found one that includes Vista home basic.

I have no idea about Vista at all so this might be a stupid question?

Can I RDP into work, SBS2003 with XP Pro client, from this new machine running Vista home basic?

Thanks for the help :)

I would imagine Vista Home Basic has the RDP client (or it can be downloaded from Microsoft), so yes.

Yes you can. The client software is available for Windows 95> and also Linux. If the computer you are remoting TO is XP PRO, then providing it's enabled, port forwarded your good to go.

Yeah, shouldn't be a problem. 1 think to remember though is that you can only remote desktop to windows server os's, XP Pro, Vista Business and Vista Ultimate.

there are several sidebar remote desktop gadgets you can download that work just fine (vista home premium)

Although you don't need these gadgets to make it work.

Thanks for the help guys :)

New PC should be arriving in a few days and will have my first taste of vista

Does your work Remote Desktop connection require you to run any software or use any gateway sites?

Whilst, XP & Vista will allow you to RD to work, it may be that third party software that manages the security of the connection might not be compatible with RD to Vista.

ATM my work's policy is that they don't support RD from Vista to XP becuase of the security software we have to run at home, which doesn't (yet) work with Vista.

just thought i'd add another 2 cents.....

I have a pc with xp sp2. I also have a laptop with vista 32 ult.

Im able to RDP or VNC from the pc to the laptop but can't go from the laptop to the pc (sever edtion installed on both).

I also can't ping the pc from the laptop but can ping the laptop from the pc.

I was reading somewhere that you need the network descovery patch for xp to enable this but it made no difference.

In the end i managed to map the c drive from the pc using the run box and the ip of the laptop. (workaround)

Seems odd that you can't really network between the two.

(or maybe i'm not doing something right!!! )
