OK I know that if you put 4gb of ram into a 32bit machine then it wont register it all.
but surely it should register more than 3070mb?

Hello Souleh, their is no set amount that a 32-bit operating system will be able to address. It is very much dependent on the hardware configuration of ones system.

One of the most prominent and most talked about advantages of a 64-bit operating system is that it can handle larger memory addresses. Now, whilst this is true, their is an often misconception that it is the only advantage to a 64-bit operating system which isn't quite true. A 64-bit operating system is faster, securer and more stable compared to a 32-bit based system. If you are interested in finding out more about this, you can read through a article published on the review website Anandtech called 64-bit: More than just the RAM. You may also be interested in reading through a post written by NathanE which can be found here.

They are both well worth reading. :)

Just had a look at that article and what a fantastic read it was, brilliant. Thanks very much for posting Yellowbeard. :)

ok, thank you very much for the in depth reply.
The GPU being 1GB would seem to make more sense of that!

Ive read the articles and please tell me if im on the right lines or am missing it.

64Bit Vista will run almost identical to 32bit in the fact that there wont be instant "wow" performance gains. It will see more ram so there is some gain atleast from that.

64bit is the "future" as it is basically in laymans terms a motorway over a normal road- its expansion. It allows more data to be sent at once rather than forcing the data in between 1 and 4 trips?
It isnt instant win but as not all programs are made for it.. yet?

One thing I want to know. If the answer to this is positive then ill buy it.

Will all my current games on steam from Counter-strike to Trackmania run the same (Not expecting gains) as they do on 32bit? Or do i need specialist 64bit versions of these games?

Thanks all for your time, youre very helpful

You can run 99% of 32bit APP's/Game in Vista64.

Thats what WOW64 is, it emulates 32bit.

I have 2 things that don't work in 64bit, 1 is a old CRT Driver, the other is a old Network APP, that I have now got a modern replacement for.

Most of your installed APP's/Games will install to the "C:\Program Files (x86)" the 32bit folder same as before, not to the "C:\Program Files" the 64bit folder.

The question about Memory and Vista 32bit gets asked and answered about 10x per week TBH its a bit boring now.

You have a 1GB GPU (no real need esp as 256bit Bus), so you loose 1GB of System Memory to that.

When I ran XP 32bit I seen 3.25GB of System Memory as my GPU is 768MB.

That all makes sense now :)
I shall probably buy it now, thanks a lot for clearing that up.

One last question, at what point does a PC become suitable for 64bit?

thanks for this great read

i to have 4gb ram and asus p5ne-sli

Will it be best to maybe go windows xp 64bit for now rather than vista? or xp 64bit + vista 64bit dualboot?

thanks

XP 64bit has HORRIBLE driver support. I think it would be problematic. Vista 64 is not bad now after SP-1. Most people have problems with older printers and other peripherals and some odd software.

just go vista 64 bit. no need for messing about with xp64. vista64 has much better driver support - it's mainstream. whereas xp64 really is a very niche product.
