Having not used media centre or a media centre remote before these might come across as stupid questions,

Anyway if I had vista media centre and a vista remote could I use it to turn the pc on and off from the other side of the room?

Can I use a vista remote to point and move the mouse pointer on screen? If the vista remotes can’t do this are there any other remote control like input devices that can do this?

Oh God that's awful. We're got one at work and even when you're used to it it's cumbersome and impracticable. I mean, it works, but you'll quickly find yourself grabbing a standard wireless mouse and just leaving that thing in a corner gathering dust.

I'd imagine that Logitech one would be rather a lot better.

I ordered a vista media centre remote from a competitor the other day.

Media Centre seems to be designed to not need a mouse - In fact, sometimes I find it really hard to use a mouse and just use my keyboard instead. - things like clicking the up/down arrows are sometimes impossible because the play/pause/ffwd etc thing pops up on top of the buttons whenever you move the mouse.

I have the Microsoft Media Center remote. Love it. :D Difenitely worth getting one. :)

Yeah, me too. It's all I use to control my TV, Sky, Media Center, DVD's etc etc.

He just asked for something to move the mouse pointer so I didn't think that the MCE remote was what he wanted.

thanks for the replies :)

I wasn't too surprised that the vista remotes don't control the cursor (would be nice if they did though) still the ability to turn the pc on and off from the other side of the room would be good, presumably there will be some sort of wake on usb support needed by the mobo? do most motherboards support this?

the logitech mouse looks quite nice but they are taking the michael with the £100 price tag

I was hoping that the vista remotes would be able to control the cursor a bit like using a laser pointer with perhaps some software based motion smoothing, but thinking about it for that to work well there would need to be some tech built into the panel, much like with the tablet pc's

I think I remember reading that someone had got the wiimote working with windows, but I presume that would have been using gyroscopes which I imagine would be quite clunky for controlling a mouse pointer

ms do a keyboard with a "touch pad" to control the mouse pointer, but again it's not cheap and I'm not sure how useable it is

That remote is the ricavision vista remote. First of a breed of remotes that use sideshow, so you can browse your music, videos, emails rss on the remote, even without your computer turned on apparently () It's bluetooth aswell so controls your pc from upto 100m

Anyway I've been trying to find a distributer for it for a long time and still no joy! :(

Got the Logitech Dinova Edge keyboard and the MXAir even though there Media center compatible and both obviously some of the best keyboard/mouse combos u can get considering there £100 each id still recommend the MCE Remote, theres so many variants by manfacturers but the one I have glows up in the dark :)

I did however come across this one http://www.gyration.com/p-68-media-...-control-windows-media-center-compatible.aspx

which has motion sensors built in like the wiimote

I'll see if I can find some videos of it:)

If your using the MCE remote then you can buy the MS keyboard which has a trackpoint mouse built in.

You have to buy the remote as well as the keyboard doesn't come with the sensor, that comes with the remote.
