I am trying to run Sims 2 on my duaghter's limited standard user account, but the game only runs in Vista if it is set to 'run as administrator', of course this means that every time she wants to play it, it prompts for my admin password before running.

Is there any way to run it as administrator without prompting for the password every time?

Hello DreXeL, you can either change your daughter's account type to an "Administrator" account by simply logging into your account and opening up "Control Panel". Once it has loaded up go to "User Accounts and Family Safety". Under the main heading, "User Accounts", click on "Add or remove user accounts". You will now be in the "The Manage Accounts" page and click on your daughter’s account and finally go to "Change the account type" and select "Administrator".

You could also set up or set up "Parental Controls" which you can customize to allow your daughter to either have access or completely block certain websites and programs.

To start off log into your account, once you are logged in type in "Parental Controls" into the start menu search bar and then click on your daughter's account.

Now this page (User Controls) will enable you to restrict the account from doing certain things. Under "Set up how (The Accounts Name) will use the computer", it will say "Parental Controls", now check the "On, enforce current settings". You can also check "Activity Reporting" to monitor exactly what your daughter is doing on the computer.

Under "Windows Settings", it should say "Windows Vista Web Filter", "Time Limits", "Games" and "Allow and block specific programs". If you first click on the "Windows Vista Web Filter" option. Make sure you highlight the "Block some websites or content". Under "Allow and block specific websites" click on "Edit and Allow block list" and you can simply allow or block specific websites.

Going back onto the very first web restriction page, Under "Block web content automatically - Choose a web restriction level:", Choose either the High setting or the Medium one depending of course how you feel about this.

After that is all done click "Ok".

Once you are back onto the main "User Control" page, you can also set when you want your daughter to use the computer and which games you would like your daughter to be able to play, if any. Once you have configured them to your liking click on the "Allow and block specific programs" setting. This is where you can select the programs you want or don't want your daughter to use.

First of all make sure under the "Which programs can (The Account's Name) use" make sure that the "(The Account's Name) can only use the programs I allow" setting is checked. Now just simply go down the list and check all the programs that you would like your daughter to be able to use.

The easier way is to press the "Check All" button at the bottom and then just deselect the programs that you do not want your daughter to be able to use. Once you have configured it to your likening, click the "Ok" button and then "Ok" again. :)

Thanks for taking the time to write all that, but.......unfortunately it didn't help in the slightest, I knew all that anyway, the whole point of setting up a standard account for my daughter was so I could use the parental controls.

I have set her account as an admin account for now so she can play the game, but this means I can no longer apply parental controls to her account, Vista only lets you use parental controls on standard non-admin accounts. Obviously this is less than ideal.

All I want to know is how I can run a program as administrator in a standard account without being prompted for an admin password every time.

  • Right-click the application, and then click Properties.
  • Click the Compatibility tab.
  • Select the Run this program as an administrator checkbox, and then click OK.

Hello DreXeL, I do apologize; I completely misunderstood your post.

Now as regards to your situation, as far as I am aware, their isn't any way to do what you are asking since surely it would defeat the whole purpose of being able to restrict certain accounts and if they need administrative purposes, the only way to provide the privileges is with a password.

Sorry I am unable to help you out. :(

Andr3w: That's exactly what i'm doing, the problem is that when it is set to run as admin when in a non-admin account, vista prompts for the admin password whenever the program is launched.
