My sister has a laptop with Vista Basic, oem on it. Her laptop has gone belly up. She can't find the original Vista disc etc that came with her laptop. Can my Vista OEM Home premium disc be used to install Vista basic oem on her laptop as long as her number is entered?

Not entirely sure on this one, but arent all the versions of vista on one disc? and as long as you have the proper serial for it then it should work?

Correct me if im wrong :D

do a full format/reinstall most lappys have the vista key stored in the bios via a SLIC table. so your windows will be automatically activated.

All versions of vista are on the one disk well I know that is the case for the disk you get with home premium and yeah you can just use her code while installing and chose basic.

Make sure to enter the key while installing so it does install basic and nothing else.

Give it a bash and find out. Nothing to lose!

I'm pretty sure that as long as you use your serial, then the installation will either not work, or work and be perfectly legit as far as microsoft are concerned.

Burnsy will probably confirm this or poo-poo it, but i'm almost certain that either the serial wont work, or it'll be fine and legal.

If its the same version , I.E - Vista Home OEM then I'm quite sure it will install from your disk but using your sisters code.

My friend had to do a similar thing recently and didnt have his Vista Home disk so he borrowed a friends, used his own code and it worked fine!

All Vista Discs have all versions on - though 32 and 64-bit versions are on separate discs.

The serial code should install successfully, and if it does it should activate fine too.

If it doesn't, you could install without a key, install the relevant xrm-ms license file for the laptop manufacturer (available in various places online) and use a generic bulk OEM key and it'll show as activated due to the SLIC license table mentioned earlier in the thread.
