Vista shut down problems

I've got a new laptop (bought in the last 6 weeks or so) with vista on it. I've installed next to nothing on it apart from AVG and zone alarm. I've put a few pictures and stuff on it and thats about all.

Every so often I hit shut down and it goes to the shut down screen with the blue circle spinning and sits there. I've left it for an hour before and then pressed and hold shut down or pulled the power.

I'm considering sending it back for repair/replacement if it's not fixable.

I also have an issue when sometimes if I leave it for 3 or 4 days the battery is just about empty from 100% when I go to use it again.

Any ideas?

Yeah I've checked those settings and it's all set to shut down. I dont have sleep or hibernate on at all. It tries to shut down but just hangs on the shutting down screen. Mostly it will shut down fine, just about 1 time in 20 it hangs.
