Hi

I've been lurking on this highly informative board for a few weeks, having
bought my Vista OEM from Overclockers (excellent service). I'm not running
a high spec machine but have been pleasantly surprised at how nippy Vista
is, especially with the latest ATI drivers.

After a week of pretty much trouble free operation, one problem I encountered yesterday was that suddenly all my USB ports would only work at 1.1 speed.

Having looked on the internet, I think I inadvertently cured it by
physically turning off the power briefly. Everything is working fine again and it was just as well I didn't reformat my USB hard drive when it wasn't
working! I think this problem arose due to Vista's power management
options not allowing me to shutdown the PC properly. Every time I use the
shutdown option (not sleep, hibernate, rest, kip or nap), it restarts again.
I thought I had disabled all of the relevant power management options in
control panel but obviously something is restarting it every time. Does
anyone else have this issue, or even better, a solution? Nothing has
changed on my BIOS power management since XP when it always shut down fully.

I'm also a bit concerned that all this stopping and starting may reduce the
life of my hard drives.

Many thanks

David

my XP desktop machine (an8 ultra/a64 venice 3000, super old 400 something watt enermax psu iirc) doesnt like hibernating, it powers on straight away after turning off, whicch is annoying. not had the same for selecting shutdown, its of no use to you but i gave up in the end as it would keep doing it after i had formatted.

so im guessing my problem could've been power or bios but i cba to find out now :)

My PC does exactly the same in Vista. It powers down and within a few seconds it's powered right back up again. I don't have any USB drives attached though.

Tried this with both sleep, hybrid sleep and hibernate and with each option is simply reboots - no resuming message, it looks like a reboot from a shutdown.

Is there any diagnostics I can perform to try and isolate where the problem is ?

Fixed it....

I went to Control Palnel -> Power Options -> Edit Plan Settings

Then to change advanced settings and made sure that under multimedia -> when sharing media both on battery and plugged in were set to let the computer sleep.

Bingo !

I've made that change on my power options and will let you know if it works. Glad I'm not the only one experiencing this odd behaviour.

With regards to the question about my spec, I'm running an Athlon 64 3400 with 1 GB of RAM and an x1600 Pro Radeon. My WEI is 4.2

It's how well it runs on only 1 gig of RAM that has surprised me. I ordered a 2GB flash drive to take advantage of Readyboost and have it plugged in all the time during my Windows session, but I don't know if it really makes any difference. What did was the ATI drivers - games now run pretty much as they used to in XP.

I upgraded my graphics card before moving to Vista and am very glad I stuck with ATI.

With regards to my shutdowns, it made no difference changing that power option. Any other suggestions gratefully received!

Hmmm, by fixed it I meant that it will now sleep (not hybrid sleep - which needs to be disabled) but hibernate still results in a reboot and a 'windows did not shutdown normally' error message.

Ho humm.

For anyone having problems, I think I have solved it on my PC. I disabled ALL power management options in my BIOS and the restarting seems to have gone (albeit from a sample of 2 shutdowns). XP shut down fine without those BIOS changes, so Vista obviously overrides it.
