Hi guys - Soz for double post (already in OS section but wanted the hardware guys here advice too)

I currently run Vista 32bit Ultimate SP1 (Dual boot with XP Pro aswell)
Now before anyone flames up and says yes its yer hardware what did you expect with Vista - please just take a mo to read my post, I just want some advice

I have streamlined Vista's services and any other unnecessary additions (readyboost, superfetch etc) have about 50 services running atm.
I have the page file on a seperate HDD to where Vista is installed.

My PC Specs are:
Antec P160 with 2x Vantec Stealth 120mm fans
AMD 64bit Dual Core 4800+ @ 2.5Ghz OC
Thermalright SI-128 CPU Cooler with Vantec Stealth 120mm fan
3Gb OCZ DDR3200 Platinum revision 2 (2-2-2-5 @ 420Mhz DDR OC)
Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe Mobo
EVGA 8800 GTS 512 (Core @ 740Mhz, GDDR3 @ 2001Mhz, Shader Clock @ 1800Mhz OC)
Enermax Noisetaker 600W PSU
Creative X-fi XtremeGamer
1TB Western Digital 16MB Cache SATA2 7200RPM (this is divided between 3 HDD's though)

I use Vista for DX10 gaming - I have disabled anything Vista doesnt need for gaming (read about 10 guides on this).

Problem is: I play Lotro with ultra High settings and every now and then it stutters which I assume its loading graphics into memory.

Do you think its my memory or CPU or both that is the bottleneck in my pc?
Whilst playing games I notice there is a particular instance of scvhost.exe that uses about 15-20% CPU - process explorer says it controls DCOM Server launcher (think thats the wording) and Plug n Play services. Is this normal? - I would rather have that CPU time for games tbh.

Using Vista benchmark my scores are:
Memory = 4.1
Cpu = 5
Everything else is 5.9

Did i perhaps miss something to make Vista quicker or is my hardware failing me and I need to upgrade? Ill have to *duck* when I tell the wife I may need to upgrade memory,mobo,cpu bear in mind

Thx for any replies/assistance.

DDR1 aint going to score 5.9 due to Bandwidth.

A Dual Core CPU wont score 5.9 (I dont even at 4.5GHZ, get 5.8 score), takes a Quad Core.

Vista Scores are BS and simply a very rough guide and all the peeps who do get 5.9 will soon cry if they dont get past that when its raised to 6.3 next time (AFAIR its going to be 6.3).

Well I dunno but with my old NFORCE4 Asus A8N-SLI Vista wasn;t to quick either, switching to intel chipset + intel processor + DDR2 was best choice ever made ;)

Now I come to think of it, have you got the latest nforce 4 drivers installed (for you chipset)?

To InkZ: No.

lol perhaps my scores werent clear

DDR = 4.1
CPU = 5
Everything else ie graphics and HDD scores 5.7 - 5.9

You were clear and my answer was also.

What score do you expect ?, its a base score, it goes by your lowest score.

PURE EXAMPLE : If you scored 5.9 for everything else but the GPU scored only 1.0, then your Vista Base Score is 1.0.

You Memory and CPU will not score anywhere near 5.9 period.

Ignore it and enjoy your PC.

Here are my LOTR system specs

Q6600 oc to 2.925
BFG 8800GTX at stock speeds (768mb)
4GB RAM
Gigabyte 965P-ds3
WD 250GB hard disk x 2 , XP on one and Vista on the other dual booting.
266x (40mb/sec read 30mb/sec write) Compact flash connected for Readyboost.

When I play LOTR on ultra high everything, I also get stutters.

Now apparently over time the readyboost will eventually start caching those frequent files. I'm not overly excited by this, but it might just work out. I'm convinced the stutters are simply the time taken to cache the files from the HDD.

He doesn't seem to fussed about his scores per se, the main point of his post was:

To me he does when he reads a BS guide that turns of many function of Windows trying to get scores up to 5.9 lol.

These guides are as old as the hills, seen them for XP and Vista and a waste of time and dangerous sometimes.

If you cannot run the OS, you need faster hardware, simple as that.

I turn of a few things myself like Indexing but nothing like in them guides.

thx for all replies...seems I need to upgrade my hardware....think its due to my memory being the bottleneck at only being DDR

Will need a good mobo/cpu/memory...what do you think? x38 mobo, e8500 and some new DDR2 stix at 1000Mhz? lets say i have £400 to spend on these 3 hardware items

800mhz may be enough, depends how far you want to OC the FSB+Memory at same time.

Then again there is good deals now on 2GB Corsair Dominator PC8500 kits.

If you are only trialing your Vista right now, upgrade to 64bit and get 4GB of Memory, far better running of Vista even without games.

I had a play with Vista 32bit Home Premium with sp1 last week, only cost me a tenner (yes it is genuine) and to be honest even that was too much!! On the rig in my siggy i got 5.9 on everything apart from the cpu (5.8) and came to the conclusion that those tests are meaningless. I gave it the full week and was glad to get rid of the rubbish. I have never used such an appalling POS operating system as Vista. Slow and absolutely nothing special about it at all. I could'nt tell the difference in Crysis between XP DX9 and Vista DX10. It even runs better in XP. There's not even any drivers from Logitech for my MX510 mouse and don't even mention my X-Fi Extreme Gamer soundcard!! I will not be going back Vista again. I prefer XP anyday. At least there are drivers for everything.

I have no drivers issues or shortages for anything on Vista64 since about Oct 2007.

Setpoint drivers are all the same, ie all hardware, thats why the Mouse+KB have Opacity Photos till you get updates next reboot and it fills it in with a photo of your exact models

I think you can simply install any Vista 32bit Setpoint for any Mouse then grab "Uberoptions" and I bet it will work.

So on a different issue for a second (sorry about this), would you say there's less chance of someone having driver issues with their hardware if they were to get vista 64 bit in a few months? I'm thinking of upgrading you see and I've got 4 gig of RAM sitting in my machine not being completely appreciated :)

I Beta Tested Vista offically, I got a full copy of it with any License I choose (DVD is same for all).

I refused to use it the 1st year it was so bad and lack of support, I was waiting on SP1

I then could not wait on SP1 as it was late by many months and I wanted to play some DX10 games (partual DX10 lol).

So YES since about Oct 2007 Ive had no real issues with support, about 5 apps I had from 2001 (before XP) did not work, but I got newer better apps to replace them.

Vista is going to need be at least SP2 before its as good/better than XP-SP2.

The worst ever supported MS OS is XP-64 bit.

I have the X-fi extemegamer soundcard running in vista 32bit no problem - they have drivers for this on their site btw

I dont care about driver issues - I dont have any - or even my vista scores (which I posted just so you could perhaps compare)

My question is do you think i need an upgrade in hardware to increase fps in dx10 titles? and if so...*** mobo, cpu, memory do you suggest?

:)
