Windows seems to be taking ages to boot now, it just started tonight. The green bar actually stops moving for 20 seconds or so and I can hear the pc spinning up my DVD drive during this time, then it carries on booting.

The time the bar is moving isnt taking too long, but its that extra 20-30 seconds while its doing nothing but spinning the dvd drive whether there is a disc in it or not.

Anyone know what the problem is or how I can fix it?

Its the rig in my sig with a P5Q pro and an NEC single layer DVD RW with the latest firmware (or was about 2 weeks ago)

Bit of a long shot but is you're AV scanning the drive on every boot-up? Some do

Thanks for that, I've just tried with my AV disabled, but to no avail. I have found that disabling the IDE controller in bios solves the problem, obviously as windows then doesn't know there is any disc drives to spin, but as soon as I re-enable it the problem comes back...

does the ide controller share with any secondary sata controllers?

on my P35-DS3R, when i set the secondary sata ports (two of them) to ahci, the ide channel joins them (which adds an extra screen to the boot process)
