Installed 64 bit vista whiel keepign xp32, now the 1st thing I've noticed is the damn hdd usage, the os just cant leave the hdd alone, i have 4 gb of ram why should it do anything to the hdd untill the ram is full ( atm 930 mb free ) ?

2ndly, 5.1 doesnt work in wmp, any apps that work with 5.1 in vista, ive set all the realtek settings etc to 5.1 and the test does reveal working rear speakers.

Finally, my msn seems to be often locking up for 5-10 secs, ive installed latest nvidia drivers and chipset drivers, what could it be ?

Atm vista feels very odd to me, I'm personalizing it atm to make it more suited for me, alrdy killed off security rubbish and UAC, I suppsoe I'll have to get used to it, OR just don't use it since I still have xp32.

Also vista feels sluggish comapred to xp , Xp is way more responsive and faster :( .

MSN Live working fine here with my nvidia drivers(both on nforce 4 board and 7800gt card).

As to HD activity what I did with my Vista x64 HP was disable System Restore and Windows Defender real time scanner (I set that to scan once a day only) my HD is idle now most times .

I leave UAC on,only takes a few weeks to get use to it and worth it for better security, besides only an extra click.

Do you have latest realtek drivers?

Vista will use as much ram as it needs(it will also move it around as well depending what programs need it),its more efficent in this department then XP,besides having lot of free ram doing nothing is a waste.

Tbh security is the least of my concerns, i just want to disable as much oif that rubbish as possible, i found xp sp2 over-exgaggeratign with security already...

Thx will look into real live scanner, yes latest realtek drivers downlaoded from asus site 2 hrs ago, as i said, the inbuilt test thing works, i mean i can hear all 6 speakers, but in wmp i cant, while in xp wmp plays on 5.1, not just stereo.

Just 1 extra click? Hell, i have to press it every 5 seconds, highly annoying, nvm anyhow as i will never enable such stuff, as i really consider security unneeded... A basic NAT fw and nod32 and adaware is all I need...

About ram, yes but I was saying why was tehre hdd activity while my ram wasn't full meaning I want it to fill up my RAM 1st b4 messing with hdd's...

Also my winrar performance benchy is under the line, its slower as my old p4 in xp 32, just 500 mb /sec, and yes multithreading is on :( .

Hmm not sure, try Trillan 3.1 and see if it locks up in that too.

I must be paranoid then when it comes to security,I use Belkin N1 router with firewall on router enabled,Vista firewall and UAC,Kaspersky 6 AV,SpywareBlaster,Spybot, plus Windows Defender set to scan once a day.

Msn seems fixed after a reboot, turned off more rubbish now also, disabled windows defender totally, and such things...

My eperience index is 5.0, is this generally good?

Might feel slow cos I installed windows on a wrong drive, its atm sitting on an ata 100 160gb hitachi dekstar 2mb cache 7200 hdd, should have installed it on my 2x seagate 7200.10 in raid 0 :( .
What also botehred me is that the os was shutting my hdd's down, was loosing time eachtime i went away for a bit and came back to pc waiting for 5 hdd's to spin up :( , really why didnt vista in setup ask for this all, instead of defaulting to settings a ''normall user'' uses, normall users dont buy vista ultimate 64 bit.

Now for the next few hrs I need to reset everything to my likings :( .

Hmm Vista has fixed itself on a lot of stuff, its now silky smooth, nice to use, and 5.1 works now in wmp whiel I didnt do anything, just fixed itself :) .

I suppose vista is nice, except for the gaming bit then.

Still has a few problems, my cardreader doesnt work ok, prolly not made for 64 bit, and my webcam lacks 64 bit drivers, but aside that everything works, I suppose I just boot into xp 32 for games, webcam stuff and cardreader stuff.

I find games run fine in Vista x64,worst case is you have to run them in XP compatiblilty mode and select run as admin ,by right clicking properties of the game concerened and selecting compatability tab.
