Behind you... Naked!
Im kinds of irritated at this now.

First off, I can do it with my NON-SP Vista disk, but I cannot do it with my SP2 ISO image.

I DO NOT have a genuine DVD with Vista SP2 on it. the SP2 ISOs that I have, are built up, and they work just fine from DVD, however, I want to put it onto a USB Flash drive.

Similarly, the Flash drives that I use, are Verbatim Pinstripe ones and I use those because they seem to be the most reliable and compatible, plus, because they come in various colours, I have them colour sorted for what O/S I have on them.

I amusing a fair selection of different programs to try getting the O/S onto the Flash drives too, with varying levels of failure.

I use:-

Bootable USB
Image Writer
Rufus
Microsofts USB Downloader tool
USB Dumper
WinSetupFromUSB
XBOOT
Unetbootin
Win32DiskImager

I have also on my travels found a tool called ISOAVDPCOPY that corrects ISOs that are incompatible to work with the MS Tool.

But absolutely NONE will get the ruddy ISO onto the USB drive.

Can anyone help me here?

I have to say this: why on earth are you still running Vista?

As for your actual problem, my hunch is that you have an issue with the ISO file. It shouldn't be that difficult and I've had Win 7 ISO corrupt before.

what issues\errors are you getting when trying to copy them to a USB stick? do you have another USB stick to try?

I use a 8GB USB stick for my installs with no issues using rufus

what version of vista is it?

you can get vista home basic ISO from here

http://getintopc.com/softwares/oper...-vista-home-basic-download-iso-32-bit-64-bit/

vista home premium is here

http://getintopc.com/softwares/oper...ista-home-premium-download-iso-32-bit-64-bit/

don't know how legit they are but something you can try to see if it works or not

I got this from another post about vista, it may help you and has links to a ISO from the MSDN site just depends on if this is the same version which you are looking for

Here you go.

Both files are official Microsoft MSDN files.

Use this to compare the file hash.

if its not the right version, at least you can use the software to compare the hashs of the ISOs from the first link I posted to make sure they are un touched

Why Vista? Because I am angry that Windows 10, is looking like yet more ridiculous attempts at getting people to like the Apps. I for one only went for Windows 8 fully, when I was able to completely seperate the stupid metro rubbish. Windows 10, looks like its trying to remove all the normal Windows things we all seem to know, and replace it all with tablet style ejaculate.
Its a sort of protest that only I am in... Im used to doing things on my own... Just ask my wife LOL

Bad ISO ?
Yes, possibly, but the ISO in itself works just perfectly when I use it to burn a DVD, and when used in a Virtual Machine. The thing is, that I have had the same issue with my own ISO that I made myself, plus the 2 that I have downloaded.

What issues?
They vary. You mentioned Rufus, and for me, Rufus gets about 10% in, and just hangs.
Maybe I need to wait a little longer, but I have waited half any amount of time, only to find out that its actually hung arther than just taking time to do something.

Yes, I have many many USB drives, as I said about the Verbatims, I use these because I can select the O/S by the colours of the drive. I have tested the drive that I am trying to use with Win7, Win8, a couple of Linux ISOs and Win 10 only the other day, and its good. I also put Vista no-sp onto it just fine, but Vista SP2 fails, and only Vista SP2

LINKS.
Yes, I will definitely re-download and the HASH wil cetainly make sure that the ISO is good.

My legal version is the upgrade version of Ultimate, but right now, I dont care if the Links give me a different version, as I also have the proper PRO and Home Basic ( LOL ) and what I found, is that my Ultimate DVD installs either versions, depending on the key used, so I would assume the linked files would be the same?

Ok thanks for this you lot... I will get new files and have another shot.

Just to prove you wrong, I re-copied and pasted the x64 one and it worked... I must have rushed and missed a character perhaps? They do work yes. Appologies etc etc.

Ok, well, the version of Rufus I have been twiddling about with, is v1.xx and I saw on the site, there is a v2.something, so i grabbed that and re-tried it on my ISO

Ahem... It Worked.

So, thanks guys. I should have just got updated software in the first place shouldnt I?

Would be interesting to know how many updates are downloaded for a Vista X64 with SP2 clean install.

Wish Microsoft would provide a new service pack for Vista and 7.

glad you got it sorted.

I create my own ISO files for windows 7.

windows 7 pro 64 bit has I think 10 updates after install and windows 7 home premium 64 bit had 6.

straight from a SP1 ISO there is like 220 odd now

No one has made an emoji that displays how dumb I feel right now.
But if there is one... Insert it here ok! LOL

I should have made a note, I did not.

Im 50-50 on this. I might change my mind, but Im on Vista on my laptop right now and it has done its updates etc, and its running brilliantly. Its on a Kingston 128GB mSata SSD and D: is a 1TB Hybrid drive and E: is 1TB off a HD 1.5TB Disc, and F: is the rest of that disk ( Im a bit OCD and I need an even number of drives... Since I only have 3 Drives, one has had to have 2 partitions )

What I am saying is that I threw Vista onto it a couple of days ago purely for a giggle, plus a sick twisted bit of self loathing, but the fact is that I also fancied having another play, and the laptop is running spot on.

I will keeprunning it until I get fed up ( which is quite often for some ridiculous reason ) or it gives me some grief. I mean, when I first got Vista, I hadtroubles galore, SP1 let me install and it was rock solid for a while, but as soon as I activated it, I would go belly up and it wasnt until SP2 that it ran spot on,but that time, Iwas sick of it and I stuck to XP for quite some time, and I only upgraded to vista on my other machines when I found cheap copies of Vista going on sale.

I still say to this day that if you have Vista on a PC and its running ok, then there is no reason to upgrade unless you actually need somethign that a new windows will give you.

What the hell am I on about again?

Why another SP? Ok, well maybe yes, but how big will it be? SP releases are not just collection packs as such, but they are very significant SERVICE packs, they also do other things to the system dont they? Not just the basic updates, or am I missing something out here?
