the main time a service pack causes problems (more so with 2000 and xp) is when the user has applied 'tweaks' and 'optimisations' to their machine from random websites on the internet.. rarely, drivers can cause issues
SP2 is good, much smoother moving from SP1 to SP2 than from RTM to SP1. You should also think about installing the platform update (Enables DX11 and generally gives a slightly snappier feeling to the whole system). Also installing SP2 will free up around 30G of hard disk space (Yes really).
Vista SP2 + platform update makes Vista perform more like Win7.
