Far far away....
Has anyone tried of the speech recognition in windows vista.

You can actually use the speech recognition to say the for forum that you wish to view, for example "Windows & other software"

I have actually created this thread using only speech recognition.

You're basically just say what you see and it words for example, the name of the game or the application you wish to run.

You can also view the start menu by just saying start and then execute any application in the list by just saying its name.

sounds cool, I'll be trying it out tomorrow when my copy of vista arrives

I've used speech recognition before and it doesn't usually last with me, we'll have to see if vista's is good enough for me to continue using it.

I have found it really intuitive so far. You basically say what you see, for example the title of the thread you want to view and it will be displayed.

If you imagine all the hyperlinks that can be displayed on a page you can actually select any link via a voice command, you just say "Show Numbers" and each link is then represented by a number, to select each link you just say the number followed by okay.

I tried it in the beta and was impressed.
After a little training of the system and a second try of the builtin demo/training process it all works pretty well.

Makes lying in bed and chaning channels easier when the remote is 'over there'. :D

The only slight issue I have come across so far is when you say a word that is actually a command and the executes the command and doesn't dictate the word that you would like to be typed. I'm sure there must be away around this though so I will keep playing.

am trying it now but I can't really work out how to use it with firefox. Like.. how do you close a tab without dictating the keyboard shortcut?

it also doesn't want to understand a word I say while trying to dictate this post, so I had to use the keyboard

I have only tried speech recognition in windows and Internet explorer.

The only real problem I have with commands is when I am trying to dictate the command when replying to a post it actually executes the command.

I'm finding it to be really and with some more practice I think it could be really useful.

Have you been through the tutorial? It doesn't take too long and it was enough for me to be lost control pretty much everything I have voice commands.

I just need to find a way to be able to dictate command without it executing if that is possible.

yeh, can't work out how to select the textbox though, and it doesn't seem to recognise it as a text input box and tries to listen for a command instead

Say "Show Numbers" then a number will appear for all selected areas. Then you just say the number then "ok"

yep have tried that but there isn't a number for the text box. You can use the mousegrid, but it still won't take anything I say as words for the textbox.

I can do it in Internet explorer as I am now, but it won't work in fire fox.

That sounds like a nice bonus then. Will save me buying the updated Dragon Naturally Speaking program which I use a lot, I usually have it take my side of the conversation when I am on a support call. Helps a lot to go back and see what you have been over when you want to log it and stuff.

I've been using it for the first time tonight, and it is quite impressive. Its a big step up from the attempt in XP, and much more intuitive. certainly will make things easier when trying to navigate some of the more unsavory web pages hands free in the darkness of my own room :p :p

Also, if you wanna have a quick laugh at the expense of MS, check out this live demo of the software they did, oh it made me chuckle
