Vista successor in 2009

an early version has been sent to selected manufacturers, here's hoping :)

There are very few pieces of information about Windows 7 and the features it will bring available at this time. So far, we have heard only about new touchscreen features as well as – and probably most interesting – MinWin, a much smaller kernel of the operating system that takes up only 40 MB of memory.

The new Windows is certainly interesting though if it does have the "smaller-kernel" so I wonder if they're ditching some legacy code at last? I doubt Microsoft will want to release it anytime soon though unless Vista doesn't pick up after a service pack or two.

If thats true then thats one short life for vista.
I think its basically going to be vista again, but a more streamlined version personally

That would just be Microsoft going back to how things used to be. People think that because there was a huge gap (6 years) between Windows XP being launched and Vista being launched, that it will be another 6 years or so before the next launch.

In the good old days Microsoft pretty much launched a new OS every 2 to 3 years, so I would not be surprised at all if Vista's sucessor will be out within a couple of years at the most. Microsoft will not want to repeat the drawn out gestation of Vista, they will, I am sure, cut some fuctionality to get a quicker release this time.

Windows 1.0 launched 11/1985
Windows 2.0 launched 12/1987
Windows 3.0 launched 05/1990
Windows 3.1 launched 04/1992
Windows 3.11 launched 11/1993
Windows 95 launched 08/1995
Windows 98 launched 06/1998
Windows 2000 launched 02/2000
Windows ME launched 09/2000
Windows XP launched 08/2001
Windows Vista launched 01/2007
Possible OS update (will be bigger than a service pack but not a new OS) sometime between Vista and 7
Windows 7 (Major new OS not just a refeshed Vista) new launch date 2nd half 2009 , originally sheduled for early 2010.

I honestly don't know why the tech media has latched onto this "MinWin" thing. It has little to do with Windows 7. I don't see either what is so fascinating about a stripped out kernel that can't do anything and is still 40MB in size...

Basically what has happened is:

1. Jim Allchin retired, and a lot of his top men that have been with the company just as long went with him.

2. Windows Core team hired new talented developers.

3. Said new developers need a small project to learn the Windows kernel inside and out.

4. Said developers think of stripping Windows down to its roots and in the process learn all about the kernel, its interdependencies and how to "reconstruct" its core parts.

It has already been said that MinWin is just an engineering research project and isn't going to be made into a product.

2009 sounds about right. Vista was a technology release (WPF/Avalon being the key component that Windows 7 uses). Windows 7 will be "user release". A user release is one that doesn't focus entirely on technology and core components but instead on the user experience. Windows 7 is essentially just Vista with a whole new Explorer shell and look'n'feel'. We are talking about the sort of scale of user interface/experience changes that occured between Win3.1 and 95. The "task bar" for example may well be completely reinvented in Windows 7...

It's the idea of Windows going about kernel the linux way that make everyone go "eeeyyyhhh???". If I understand it correctly MinWin is supposed to be core OS that boots into shell, with networking, basic drivers and some server stuff, like light http, all that off 25Mb worth of files with 40Mb of memory.
Kind of takes you back to times of dos prompt, when you had a choice of booting to win 3.11 or win 95 from the same "base". Or run memmaker and fire up Tie Fighter ;)

I think he means Vista is a misfire, false start, like ME was. There was no point of going for ME because it was just slower, buggier, more annoying 98SE with some eye candy and new problems for home users. It was generally ignored and disliked by developers and offered little to no advantage for business users. It sort of applies to Vista too...

It doesn't since the uptake of Vista is much higher than Me, software support is much higher, the OS is 100% stable and fast on a modern system

Hardly anything like ME at all.

This forum is one of the biggest tech forums in the UK and I bet at least 50% of members are on Vista and at least 80% of those are on modern day hardware capable of gaming respectively.

I agree this might be true on forum dedicated to latest hardware and software, but it's a bit skewed statistics - it's like joining HotRod forums and asking if anyone is driving Nissan Primera. :D

Your neighbour, or you mum, what would be advantage for her to switch from XP to Vista? Or an office network of mid range XP PCs. How would you sell Vista to them?
