Unable to play MP3s in surround sound?
Rear speakers quiet?

Well here's the fix after spending the last hour trying to fix it for a friend :p

Tried drivers - nope there fine!

Then went into the Enhancement section as a last ditch effort to find some feature that would enable the true surround sound glory. Here is the solution:

Go to Enhancements within the Properties of the sound device
There should be an option 'Speaker Fill' tick that
Done!

Hope this helps a lot of people, god knows why it isn't set on as default!

what do you mean by "true surround sound glory" most tunes are recorded in stereo so listening to them surround isn't "true".

just wondering what you mean.

Figure of speech :p I know it's *technically* not true surround but it offers more of a surround sound effect and is better than 2.1 :)

Some people seem to have 5.1 by default although noticed a few threads where people seem to be experience similar problems as my friend, so thought may aswell post this thread to help them out.

but how is it playing 5.1? is there a setting somewhere that maps the front left also to the rear left and the same for the right? In XP my media players always put out a 2.0 signal, then I'd do the necessary upmixing to get sound from all speakers after it left the soundcard.

DVDs have always played 5.1 no problem - same is true for vista.

I think with my mp3s it's playing 5.1 it's just that there's nothing on 3.1 of the channels.

It doesn't offer surround sound at all. You can't get 5.1 channels from a 2.0 channel MP3 file...

"Surround fill" simply duplicates the stereo signal and sends it to all speakers. Hence it "fills" the room with sound from more speakers.
