I have a problem with svchost.exe process tree using about 280mb memory in total. I am not sure if I have a virus or something has been corrupted. Here is the tasklist for svc so please let me know if you see anything dodgy.

Hell I hate Vista, such a bloated rubbish OS. My total memory use at idle is 1.35GB where as in XP it's 500mb. The only reason I use it is for DX10 which is also a waste of time. Don't get me started.

Vista is not XP, and you have 4GB RAM therefore RAM usage is around 35%. This is completely normal.

Why don't you just use vlite?

When I used Vista, it used about 1GB idle after bootup.

Then when I vLited it, it used about 650MB idle after bootup. And it felt snappier too.

My Vista using no apps used around 1GB of my 4. If you have the memory, it may aswell use it man.

280mb memory, that's nothing, my firefox occupied 2.7gb of ram last night :D It's from a combination of the firebug plugin loaded, never closing Firefox and accessing server logs in the browser.

To cut down on your svchost usage turn off extra unneeded services in your service.msc. Thats where the buggers load from.

So Vista is making use of your RAM - in fact, it's making use of all your RAM through Superfetch - whilst XP is leaving about 90% of your RAM empty, doing nothing but using electricity. Great

Of all the reasons to dislike Vista (and there are a few I'll grant you), memory management isn't the one I'd pick....

I have 8GB ram and it's not uncommon for 49% of it to be used with just a few apps running minimised on my Vista64.

Does not slow down, does not hinder my working...I however, like others, know that unused RAM is inefficient and wasted RAM, not the other way round.

As long as the ram is available for games I am fine with it. I may have been wrong on my assumption regarding ram usage but I don't think I am wrong about Vista and DX10 being dissapointing. At least they appear to be getting Windows 7 right.
