I had been using vista for a little while when when I chose shut down from the menu which i did correctly it just kept restarting and wouldnt shut down any ideas why?

Two things to check
First is that the default option for the Shutdown Icon on the start menu is to drop your PC into Sleep. to change this go into Control panel / power options select the current plan and click change, then clcik change advanced. now look for " Power Buttons and lid" change the option "start menu power button" to shutdown.
The other is your PC may be going in to BlueScreen. The default option is to reboot your PC when this happens. To change this behaviour control panel/system/advanced system (On the left) / startup recovery options and take the tick out of "automatically restart" then if your pc is going into a bluescreen on shutdonw you will see the error.
