Over there...
Not sure whether to jump in with both feet and drop 64bit vista on instead of 32bit?

Is there decent support for 64bit this time round? Or is 32bit "safer"

system,

e6300 @ 3GHz
ATI X1900XT 512
2GB RAM
Asus p5NE-SLI

Im in the same boat mate, I cant decide, im deffo getting ultimate OEM, but whether its x86 or x64 I really dont know.

Just a bit worried about apps not working (anyone know if utorrent works in x64?) and other stuff. I might just go x86 as Im not bothered about it being able to take more ram, i'll not be upgrading my 2gig anyway. Security wise, im also ok, with x86... so it might just be a nice safe bet staying 32 bit.

I have found that if there isnt x64 drivers for my hardware, there isnt x86 ones yet either !

Running x64 here fine with the exception of proper x-fi drivers although it does work with the betas, No real issues so far, and some games have benched faster than XP. x64 is the way to go. but if your not sure plump for x86 just now

i'm not too worried really as if its no good i'll reinstall with 32bit, but could do without the aggro of reinstalling when i cant get mobo drivers for example :)

in which case you have to research befor you install,

i have 680i and all required drivers were "in the box"

most network cards and wi-fi cards are the same.

post yer spec ?

If you have 2GB+ of RAM go for 64bit.

There are no programs I have found that won't run in 64bit Vista since 64bit also caters for 32bit software. Off the top of my head I have installed these programs in Vista64 and they all run as they would in XP:

Winamp
CDex
CCleaner
Irfanview
Spybot
Adaware
eMule
WinRAR
Quicktime
Opera
DiVX
DeepBurner

I'm sure there are more but I can't remember. Especially since there are drivers for ATI and Creative cards that's most basic things covered.

Does winzip work ? As I'm waiting on stupid City Link to deliver my Vista today

Haven't tried it yet since I use WinRAR. I think the chances of Winzip not working are very small.

People seem too concerned that a lot of software won't work on Vista64 but MS has done a lot to make Vista compatible with older software - it would be pretty pointless if it didn't. Like I say, I haven't come across anything that won't install and run in Vista64 [oh, apart from Speedfan but that may have been fixed too since yesterday's update].

What about running a game like BF2 (which is 32bit) would that run on Vista 64 with 2GB of ram ok?

Running Vista x64 OEM HP.

My list.

Spybot
Spywareblaster
Steam(TFC,CS etc..)
Vanguard MMORPG
Oblivion
Might & Magic 8
Printmaster 16 Platinium
Firefox 2
Thunderbird
CCleaner
Nero 7
Utorrent
Quicktime
Avast free version AV
O&O defrag 8.6 (Vista x64 bit version).
Zip Genius.

Glad I went with 64bit version, driver wise it had all my drivers except my Leadtek USB DTV dongle tuner(No Vista drivers including x68 version at all for that at moment).
99% of my drivers are working so very good support for a new OS release.

I tried Vista 64 and couldn't live with it due to driver support.
32 bit is the way to go for at least 6 months IMO.

Would it be out of order to ask if anyone has no cd/dvd cracks working in vista x64? this is for games I own LEGALY by the way.

Mods delete if inapropriate. :)

The operative phrase here is "with 2GB of RAM". The game would most certainly run, but remember that Vista64 takes more RAM than 32bit Vista. On my machine Vista takes up about 800MB RAM with no apps open.

If you just had BF2 running, which I imagine takes about 300MB RAM or something, that still gives you some headroom above that, though you may want to think about upgrading to 4GB for DX10 games [a while off, admittedly].

The short answer is I imagine you'll be fine.

Not tried BF2 but BF2142 plays fine on x64 with 2GB ram.

Also these are working fine too

PowerDVD 7
Daemon tools
DVD Shrink
Imgburn
Syncback SE
