Mate of mine just bought a new machine with Vista pre-installed. He wants to replace it with XP Pro though but is having some trouble.

I talked him through changing the boot order in BIOS so the optical drive is the primary boot device, but with the XP cd in the drive it still loads straight into Vista without giving the option to boot from the cd, then format. The optical drive is working properly, as is the CD (you can explore the CD in Vista and see all contents).

Is there something else he should be doing? Not had any experience of Vista so am out of ideas.

Could it be he is missing press ant key to boot from CD message or what type of windows CD has he got.

May I ask why he is changing to XP.

Not missing the prompt to boot from CD no, just loads Vista as normal.

No idea why he wants to change, not really the issue though.

if it doesn't show up during boot, then it could be a 'crap' copy of xp where someone has removed the boot files from it, try that disc in another pc

or get him to use nlite to re-create the boot files on it..

a vista tweak guide will probably sort him out, that and new drivers along with full windows update makes vista a lot better

I'm pretty sure he's not missing the "Press Any Key..." prompt, I sat through numerous reboots over the phone having set the CD drive to primary boot and no such option appeared. Sounds as if it might be a 'dodgy' CD in which case.

The machine is to be used for music creation, he's got all sorts of software and synths that either won't run (apparently) or have trouble with Vista as they're a few years old now.
