Vista Ultimate 64

I always thought that but a new i7 means I have had to take plunge plus I couldn't be arsed to try and convince ms that really it's the same PC but a new mb yet again

Vista is great..... used XP from launch day and Vista from launch as well. Both were a pain for the first few months until drivers and software caught up. If your hardware supports it there really is no good argument not to get the 64 bit version as this is the future. Personally I might be tempted to wait until Windows 7 comes out though as this will be quite soon. I have the Ultimate version of Vista and find it was a complete waste of money over home premium. MS really screwed up with the Ultimate extras that never materialised.

Yeap, I just checked that all my drivers were ready to download and went for it. Haven't looked back since. Quite a solid OS in my opinion, though UAC has to be silenced/disabled.

i dont like vista period, awful UI, W7 shaping up better tho

That's a silly reason not to like Vista. There's very little difference in the UI between Vista and 7.

If you're talking about OEM then new Mobo = new PC.

Vista x64 SP1 is a fine. I haven't had any problems with it in a long time. I really miss it when I go to work and I'm back on XP.

Agreed with what's already been said. Ultimate is the biggest waste of money ever. Microsoft promised lots of exclusive Ultimate extras but never delivered. Stick with Home Premium unless you've got a very good reason to buy Ultimate.

W7 seems quite similar to Vista, and in fact doesn't boot up or seem any quicker either. But of course it is a beta so you can't draw any conclusions from that. Anyway, give Vista good hardware and plenty of memory, and it is fast. On that sort of machine, I can't see W7 really being an improvement.

I also personally can't see w7 changing from beta to the retail product, to how it looks either.

On 64bit Vista Home Premium from XP 64bit and i have to say it was the best move i've ever made.

Vista is faster, more stable, better looking, uses more of my computer to make it function faster, 64bit makes applications feel snappier, not sure if they actually are or not though. 64bit windows is loads more safer then normal 32bit.

Overall 64bit Vista is a supreme product over XP. There i not a single reason to use XP anymore.

Been using it since it came out. Haven't had any problems with it at all. Can't say i notice a lower performance on games but then I don't have XP installed aswell to compare. I think XP feels old now and vista is new and fresh and trys to do some neat things, some times failing though. The aero thing I thought would have been proper 3D windows you could twist and move in all directions. Not the silly tab thing that shows them at one angle. I kind of like windows 7 now though and might get that for my main rig and put vista on my othe one.

W7 is a stripped down vista really to make it less clunky. Thats why the beta is so stable already. And most hardware works already as the same drivers are being used.
