Vista Ultimate & DX9

I installed Call of Duty World at War which comes with DX9. I thought the game would automatically detect it is Vista then wont ask for a DX9 install and settle for Vista's DX10.

But during installation, it still asked for DX9 install, so I said yes and it installed. After that's done, I issue DXDIAG from Start>Run, fortunately, Vista still keeps DX10.

So would the game now run on DX 10?

It'll run on DX10. The game says its installing DX9, but it will detect DX10 and not overwrite it.

No its running in Dx9 as COD is a Dx9 game.

Vista has both Dx9 and Dx10, as Dx10 is not backwards compatible.

Under Vista you should always make sure you're running the latest versions of DX9 & DX10.

You know you can run games on 9 still if you have 10, in fact only if games are programmed for 10 they run on it, but most aren't. For example if I run Age of mythology or C&C Generals it runs on dx8 not dx9 or dx10. Or Peggle which runs in dx7...

It's always worth having the latest version of the redist, from here, downloaded and extracted on your HDD.

That way it's always there to be reinstalled, doesn't take long, if you've installed and older game that forces a DX install on you and you want to make sure that you are still up to date.
