Vista Ultimate Extras

Well, that sucks.
Hope they've got something better up their sleeves.

I get vista for free from university, but if i was paying i wouldn't be tempted by these "extras".

I'd expect more exciting things in the future but to be honest that is a ****-poor set of items to launch with.

I'm more amazed that Microsoft have announced "Windows Home Server", the idea being that you store all your home's file centrally, and it back them up etc etc.

Why would any standard consumer buy a computer that they can't directly use. I really can't see Home Server being anything other than a flop.

Edit: The whole Vista presentation thing didn't really introduce anything that I haven't already seen in some incarnation in competitors software products. Plus I really don't like the way the new start menu doesn't pop out child menus across the screen - anyone know if this can be changed?

I really don't know about this. In conecpt it seems a good idea, but I don't think it's going to be sucessful as a standalone product. I would have suggested integration with Vista Ultimate or something.

The Home Server idea is just a part of Microsoft's grand plan for the digital home. It'll ideally be a small low powered server that can silently download video/music content during the night and then present them as playback options in the morning on Media Center Extender devices such as an Xbox 360.

No average joe would buy one seperately of course. Which is why Microsoft has a marketing department... They'll probably start pushing the concept of a "Media Home kit" which includes a Media Center PC and a Home Server. God knows what they'll think up with their Media Center hardware manufacturing partners.

That's where things are heading anyway.

I think they'd have done a lot better by simply distributing mirrors of files around the other Workgroup machines on a home network, rather than having to have a separate machine for it. I haven't seen many details on it simpy because it's so new, but stuff like printer sharing is the only other thing a home user really needs, and any Windows box can do this.

This whole IPTV move that Microsoft are making with Xbox and Media Center is in direct conflict with download limits implemented by UK ISPs. Will be interesting to see how that pans out - if IPTV traffic isn't counted in the limits for example.

I just don't think many average homes can afford to run a dedicated server. Also, I think it will be hard to market it to the general public as I think they'll find it hard to understand the benefits over the cost.

Download limits will be modified in the future once this sort of technology starts to take grip. Demand and supply. BT's 21CN will certainly lift the crushing weight that's on ISPs at the moment regarding download usage.

I really wouldn't worry about that sort of thing. Sky didn't have any problems convincing people they needed to spend £100 setup charge on a set-top box did they? ;) There are all sorts of clever ways Microsoft and their partners can hide the cost.

Have a free pint of vision, on me :p

Yeah, maybe your right, who I am to stop MS' marketing dept?

If Ultimate came with a 2007 rewrite of that Windows 95 Extra's CD game called "Hover" then people would buy it. That would be awesome.

Hmmmn...according to the poll on the home page 35% of people are really excited about DreamScene.

[sarcasm]I'm glad I ordered Ultimate edition, I knew the extras would be worth it[/sarcasm] :D

If you watch the video on that site for dreamscene it say at the end "Windows dreamscene plays your home videos too" and shows you a bear messing about in a river. Makes you wonder how where the bear behind the camera bought it from and how it can work it with those big claws...Dixons probably.
