Probably a silly question, but what features does Vista Ultimate provide over a cheaper version such as Home Basic or Home Premium?

Cheers. It looks like the expensive versions just have some extra programs which you could download freeware alternatives of anyway. I think I'll go with Home Premium because it has Aero which looks pretty.

Vista Basic is utterly useless and a pointless upgrade over XP

Vista Home Premium + RDC Patch = Everything you will ever need.

i wouldn't say that, what's really in HP that you miss in basic? -besides media centre, and support for more ram & more cpu's

run it on my mum's machine and it's perfect for her

Nothing. I use XP.

I only use Vista on my HTPC and that because XP MCE is poor compaired to the Vista version.

If your going to spend money on an OS, dont get the most stripped down basic version of it. XP is cheaper than Vista Basic.
