Ok guys, this may or may not be a problem as I have migrated from using an Apple Mac so not sure on the workings of Windows Software but I find this problem pretty annoying, ok here are the symptoms:
I have a new pc (had for about 3 months) which has Windows Vista Ultimate (32 bit) installed, sometimes when maybe having a few programmes open I go to play one of the vista ultimate inbuilt games like "hearts" or "hold 'em" my system gives a kind of beep and makes a sound like it is coming in and out of sleep mode?? Anybody any ideas why this would be doing it as I find it pretty annoying although it doesn't crash the system (happens with other programmes as well as games as I hear it happening through the night when I take it Windows Updates/Virus Protection programmes are running).
I have "High Performance" selected as the Power Plan which means that the PC should never be in "Sleep Mode". I have also put my overclock back to default speeds to see if it was some sort of system unstability but the problem does still randomly happen.

Here is my system:
core 2 duo [email protected]
gigabyte 965p DS3
2GB Crucial Ballistix PC6400
Corsair HX520w PSU
Galaxy 256mb 7600GT
Samsung Spinpoint 250GB Sata HD

thanks for looking guys as I say my sytem is stable apart from this annoying little problem.

I have turned my speakers off and the "beep" is still sounding, I say beep but really it is more like the sound you would hear when say a monitor is going into sleep or hibernate mode, as I say I sometimes hear this through the night when the machine is doing nothing apart from downloading, could it be windows defender or windows realtime indexing or something as the beep is sometimes followed by lots of hard disc acticity... puzzled??
thanks
rikky.

How would I go about disabling it Jon86?? I have been through all my Windows Sounds to see if it was listed a couple of days ago but I could not find this particular beep/hibernate sound.
thanks
rikky.

lol thanks mate, I have tried what is suggested via your link and if that doesn't work I feel a divorce is my next logical step.
cheers

Finally managed to solve this bleeping problem!!
It turns out it is my external hard drive which is causing the problem. It is either the hard drive which is making the beep, pause and then sound of coming out of sleep/hibernate mode or it is causing my computer to do this.
Disconnecting the hard drive lets my pc run as it should in vista and seems a hell of a lot nippier, has anybody got any ideas why an external usb hard drive would cause this??
Looks like I will have to ditch the external and just add another internal sata drive if I can't get to the bottom of it.
