Oh dear. Microsoft really have spoilt their own launch here. First the "There's no x64 CD in the box, you must order it..." scandal... and now this...

Upgrade editions of Vista _require_ an already installed copy of a previous version of Windows. They do not work in the same way as previous Upgrade editions of Windows in that they simply test if you have the original install media from the previous OS.

I'd imagine there will be a fair few OcUK'ers who are about to get stung by this late breaking but vital information.

It's a PITA, yes, but I don't see it as a big an issue as the "No x64 disk" problem.

I mean, is it really such a pain to install XP and then upgrade fresh? It can't really add that much time onto the install, can it?

Yeah, people have known this for a few days now. It's a right PITA, but most people on here can solve that by a purchase of True Image or Ghost.

MS really havn't been quite on the ball with this release.

I know but basically if you have bought an Upgrade Edition there is no possible way to have a "clean", "fresh", "untainted" (whatever you want to call it) install of Windows. There will always be remnants of XP or 2000 left over. I, personally, would really hate this. I'd probably blame every inevitable unrelated problem I had on the upgrade process...

I think I heard that you can format and then install vista, but you can only do this once the upgrade has seen a validated qualifying product. Whether this is true or not I don't know.

Apparently you can do a clean install. You still need XP installed first, but then Vista setup lets you choose a clean install option.
At least one person in this forum has already done that, IIRC :) So all is not lost. It is still unnecessarily convoluted though.

Ah not quite so bad then - you can have a clean install. It's just going to be a right stress having to install XP just to satisfy Vista's installer. Can you imagine doing this in 3-4 years or so when XP is very much consigned to the history books?

MS are getting very strict on the licencing. Its confusing to average Joe Soap. I'd love to be working in their Customer Support section this year
