hey guys.
thinking i'm going to get vista very soon.
the problem is is the upgrade retail version ok. i've got xp on my machine which is also an upgrade variant although i do have 98 full product. can i get the upgrade still with vista?
also, this one Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium - upgrade package is the one i'm thinking of. will it come with 32 bit support and i will have to ask for the 64bit disk or are both in the same package.

hope you've followed what i'm trying to get at.

This is the great thing about going down the retail route.
Not only do you get a much more flexible license (one that you can move around from machine to machine) but you also get the opportunity to buy a cheaper upgrade when a new OS is released.

I trace the OS on one of my machines right back to the full retail version of Windows 95 that I purchased.
I then bought the upgrade to Win98, the upgrade to Win2k, Upgrade to WinXP and finally, most recently, upgrade to Vista.
As you upgrade your license so you cannot reuse your old license.
So in the example you gave the Win98 license was no longer a seperate, valid license once you upgraded it to WinXP.
So your WinXP license is no longer seperate once you upgrade it to Vista.

Home Premium will only come with the 32bit version in the box.
You can however send away for the 64bit version - link below:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/editions/64bit.mspx

Alternatively you could borrow somebody's 64bit media.

This is the other advantage of Retail - your license is valid for 32bit & 64bit (one or the other) where as the OEM licenses are 32bit or 64bit.

Stoofa and I still disagree over this point but he is correct with the rest.

Although you can't use any of your upgrade licences on any other machines, used as one product, you will have what is equivilent to a FPP version of Vista.

so you're saying i can't use the upgrade path again from win 98 to vista.
i have to buy the full version.
sorry if i sound thick.

edit. after re reading the first post what your saying is when i upgrade i am really upgrading the licence to run windows. so in reality my xp licence is a full one so i can buy an upgrade vista.

Basically, all an upgrade licence does is extend the rights of the 'qualifying product' (your previous version of Windows) to cover the new version. Depending on what the first licence is in the chain, depends on what the specifics of the licence is. As you have the FPP (Full retail version) of Win 98, you will effectively have the FPP version of Vista once you purchase the Vista upgrade.
