just a quick question is there any difference in performance doing an upgrade to vista visa xp or doing a clean install to vista>

a clean install is always much better performance wise. :)

i'd never upgrade windows. more hassle than it's worth. ok you could argue re-installing all your software is a hassle but i know what i'd rather do. :)

i have bought a upgrade copy there is no way of doing a clean install with that correct.
sorry for the stupid question.

There is. Run it from within XP, choose clean install, install on a different partition.

You can (thanks to an oversight) install Vista from the disc without a key, then upgrade from there with your key. Which means you don't have to install XP first.
