Hi guys
i have one big problem with my vista 64 bit. the dam thing is eating away at my hard drive. i have a 150GIG drive after i have formatted it. it works out at 139GIGs. anyway everything was fine for a few days but then after a while it was just using all my drive up. today when i looked i had 11GIGS left. 2 hours later i had just under 2GIGs left.

I am now getting pop up saying i am running on low hard drive space. i have turned system restore off and i have ran spyware programs and its finding nothing . i have remove over 2GIGs of music to free up more space. only to find a bit later that vista has now used that as well. can anyone please tell me where all this space on my drive is going

Hi
the first thing i did when i installed vista was to turn it off. so it cant be that. im at a loss to find out what the problem is

I had a similar problem a while back with a fresh install of Vista to try out on a spare PC with a20gig hard drive .Installed fine but took up 13 gigs of space .Surely , Vista doesn't use 13gigs .Anyway tried it , didn't like it , switched it off and never went back to it .
Just as well , if I'd left it on and it was eating hard drive space like humax's Pc ,my drive would have been full up in a couple of seconds .

I've never heard of this problem before. My standerd installation of Vista + games is about 60gig and this hardly changes over a few weeks.

Have you tried running the Disk Clean-up utility. See how much it suggests for deletion.

Hi.
yes i have ran Disk Clean. and removed everything i can. this dose give me a bit of space back, but only for vista to eat it all up again

using XP?
Or even better, OpenSuSe/Ubuntu :D

Back on topic..

Can you determine where the majority of the used space is located?

Right click > Properties
1.) Windows ( should be ~7+ Gigabytes ish....)
2.) Program Files
3.) Users
4.) System Volume Information

At least then you can work out if it's Windows, System Restore, User data or a 3rd-Party application eating the disk space.

Just found this from someone with the same problem. Worth a try.

Ok guys, very very mysterious...My user account ate up all my hard drive
space for some strange and bizarre reason, so I created a new account and
deleted the old one and wolla all my missing hard drive space has been
restored!! Thank you all for your help and I hope this doesn't happen again.

You might be able to get an idea of what's eating the space through the resource monitor. You can get at it from the task manager on the Performance tab. If you open up the disk list if something's writing a lot, the value in the Write column will be high. It should at least tell you the latest file that it wrote. You might have to delete something to trigger this if it's just using up spare space.

Also worth looking at the Event Viewer (not sure where it lives, but you should be able to get at it through the search on the start menu). There might be an error or warning in there that relates to your problem.

Hello humax, this doesn't sound like Windows Vista itself is eating up your hard disk space. You're missing around 120GB of hard disk space which isn’t normal and is most likely due to some kind of Virus. Try doing a couple of things first but I think the best thing to do will be formatting your hard drive and re-installing Windows Vista. :(

Type "cmd" into the start menu search bar and run it with administrative rights. Once the command prompt windows appears type in the following:

chkdsk /f (Press Enter)

It will then come up with "The type of the file system is NTFS". "Cannot lock current drive".

"Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process, Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? <Y/N>". Then just press Y. It will now say "This volume will be checked the next time the system restarts".

Chkdsk.jpg

Now Reboot the machine, as part of the reboot, it will now run a through a scan of the hard disk and correct any logical errors. Please note though, if the disk is really corrupt, whatever the cause, the result may be some lost data as well. So it will be worthwhile backing up anything that is important to you.

After the Chkdsk has finished, log back on and run "Disk Cleanup" followed by "Disk Defragmenter".

Once you have done the above, download TreeSize , (which is a very basic program that allows you to see how much space each primary folder is taking up i.e. Windows Files, Program Files etc.) and install it. Then load TreeSize up, once it has popped up, go to the top taskbar bit and click scan and then Local Disk. Now if it isn’t to much trouble, is their any chance you could post up a screenshot, just like the one below? :)

I dont know why but that made me laugh as if your PC was about to explode once it had used up all your HDD space..

Hope it gets fixed soon. Fire_Wizards idea sounds very good. as do 1 or 2 others.

Hi guys
ok i have done everything Fire Wizard has said . and this is what i get

SequoiaView. An awsome little program, shows your hard drive as a 'treemap'. Basically, lots of boxes, sizes relative to the size of the file. You can point it at your hard drive, and it will show the size of the folders and subfolders there, or you can direct it to a specific folder, and it will show the folders and subfolders there.

In your case, I'd reccoment pointing it to your Program Files and you Users directories.

Hi guys
i think i have found the problem. and boy do i feel silly . i was looking in the add and remove and came across a program called error repair professional. i never knew just how big this program was. its 67.8GB  after opening the settings to this program i found that it makes backups of everything it does. there where about 11 back ups in there. not sure how big they where but after i removed them i got about half my hard drive space back.

There will also be more space after i remove error repair professional :D i never knew that a program like that would make such big backups. so heres a pic of treesize with all of them backups removed .all i need to do now is do a disk clean and a defrag and i think i should be good to go :). but i would like to thank all you guys for helping me out with this problem. and a special thanks to Fire Wizard for taking the time to type all that info out for me.

Cheers Guys
:)

Treesize is an excellent little app, thanks for *** heads up. Just found 15gb space that was being used and not needed.

Thanks again :)
