Vista video problem

I installed vista yesterday, and had it working fine for a brief while. Now whenever I load it up the vista logo is missing from the initial boot page and it just displays the green progress bar at the bottom. More worrying is when it eventually fully loads I get nothing but a mouse cursor. No desktop, no taskbar, not a sausage.

I've tried booting into safe mode and low res mode and the same thing happens. What on earth could the problem be?

For me, this happened while I had my bluetooth dongle in (with its own stock drivers, didnt happen with other drivers).

Also happened sometimes with the MS VX-6000 webcam, though Im hoping with this fresh install none of that sort of crap is going to happen anymore.

Unplug all devices with the exception of the Keyboard and Mouse and go from there.

You could be right Lister2020, I have a wireless USB adapter plugged into a USB port on my monitor so that could well be the problem. I'll give a try and let you know if it works.

Another vote for USB from me. I've noticed that boot-up is much quicker without USB devices plugged in. I have found myself looking at a blank screen more than once whilst devices are being loaded. What's odd is that there is often no disk activity, just an eerie silence.

I've removed the USB device and the problem still persists. The only other USB devices I have is my keyboard and mouse which I can't remove for obvious reasons. I did install a driver for the wireless dongle after I installed vista, but there's no way of removing it unless I can get something meaningful up on the screen

The funniest thing is if I leave the computer for a while after booting the screen saver works. This one’s got me really stumped.

That suggests video driver problem to me. It's worth trying to uninstall/re-install them. Have you tried safe mode?

I ended up doing a fresh install. It just wasn't worth the hassle of finding the problem when I didn't have any files to backup etc. I haven't had the problem since the latest installation, so fingers crossed it doesn't happen again.

Thanks for your help anyway.

There is no Vista logo in that boot screen by design.
