Interesting (or not so depending on your pov) of graphics performance between vista and 7.

Interesting to me as I've been quite amused at listening to loads of people claming that 7 provides more fps than vista (and using this as a reason to upgrade), reading the benches they are pretty even, in fact it seems vista on average is slightly faster.

Not that I'm against 7 in fact I have preordered pro and expect to install it into a new rig come October.

I think this is a reality check, 7 aint gonna make your gaming experience any better.

Don't forget that the W7 graphics drivers are far from optimised yet.

Sure, there not too many differences between Vista and W7 when it comes to graphics drivers. But there are some new architectural changes in W7's WDDM that can improve performance with regard to GPU context switching (time slicing) and GRAM management when the graphics driver supports it...

But yes. In general, Windows 7 is going to be roughly the same level of performance as Vista. Vista was the fastest OS Microsoft had ever produced. Any reports to the contrary were/are misinformed.

It may have been the fastest, but I guess the only conclusion I can make is that it had more to do, as it certainly wasn't as responsive as XP. No I don't have any benchmark tests to back this up, but I used Vista at work, XP at home doing similar work and XP was faster. No doubt about it.

Complete opposite.

Vista performed 'worse' than XP in synthetic benchmarks.

However, it excelled when it came to "user responsiveness" which is something that can't be measured really.

This is because Vista had a larger working set overhead. It had more going on, such as desktop composition. The strange paradox with the desktop compositor is that it is probably BOTH the primary cause for Vista's reduced synthetic bench scores but also the primary reason that user responsiveness is far beyond what XP could achieve. Other features like Superfetch also helped hauled it way above XP for user responsiveness.

Windows 7 drivers as said above are far from optimal at this stage... also bare in mind that many game developers and driver/hardware developers have stated that they will be concentrating on windows 7 for future performance opptimisations and these may or may not get back ported to vista and XP... so down the line your most likely to be worse off.

I always find that every time I install reinstall an os it seems and games too noticeably faster.

I'm not sure how much of this is got to do with psychology however, I expect quite a lot.

I like both 7 (apart from some weird microstutter I think I can see when opening and closing windows) and VIsta, the only reason I bought 7 was it was so cheap and I plan to upgrade soon, so may as well go with the latest OS.

Gaming wise I'll proly sill be playing the same stuff I have been playing since xp anyway SIm City, TMNU and MAME, damn I need to find something else to play...

I find Win7 only more responsive on old low spec PCs,as to the benchmarks its about right from what I have seen from different sites, again some people like to hype Win7 because its new,I hope they do get some performance increase with drivers down the road but I don't expect a big improvement to be honest.

End of the day both Vista and Win7 I find very good...Roll on Win8 then we'll have a whole new ball game :).
