WEll, i am getting a new motherboard for my PC. I mentioned this in another thread of mine and the people who replied told me that if i changed my motherboard i would have to re-install windows.

However, my pc being factory built: i do not have the disk for XP. In other words, if i get a new mobo, i will hav to buy a new OS. I, however, cannot choose between VISTA and XP.

Could you please recommend to me which you think is better for me. I use it for both school work and for gaming, in fact i am quite a heavy gamer and i dont want any LAG or out like that wen i play. SO, which would be better?

PS, if you happen to recommend XP, does anyone know where i can still get Windows XP: media centre edition?

IMO Vista is the way to go.

If you have (and can use) XP, then i wouldnt be desperate to upgrade, but if you are upgrading anyway, might as well go Vista.

Vista Home Premium Education edition is cheap as chips too, and includes Vista Media Centre

Advise you specifically research if hardware & software you plan to use is compatible & or if its got any problems with Vista.

The old man picked up a new laptop with Vista only to find his 'money-maker', AutoCad 2002 does not work properly. Before you say it, he's adamant not to upgrade i.e. doesn't want to spend £800+ among the many reasons.

If we knew where you can get MCE we couldn't tell you because its against forum rules (see FAQ) :(

He upgraded before checking whether or not his money-maker would work? Lol.

I'm sure there'll be a way for him to get it working though in Vista, or are the software company making people pay for Vista-compatible software?

As your a heavy gamer then I recommend Vista because it has DX10 whereas XP only goes up to DX9.

If your getting a new motherboard then your probably getting a new CPU and more than likely a new graphics card.

Vista runs fine on dual core modern processors. It can get a little laggy on old single core processors (despite the protests it doesn't) because of the increased background processes it has compared to XP.

You also should be looking at 2Gb of DDR2 memory as a sweet spot for Vista and gaming. Although with memory prices as they are, I would add another 1Gb for headroom.

I was thinking about getting an 8800 card, but then there are no DX10 games as yet. Personally I would get something like a X1950XT until the 2nd generation of DX10 cards come out as the DX10 cards have not actually been proven to play DX10 games very well and the nVidia 8800 has been around for ages now. The X1950xt can be had for about £110 and it gets you a very good DX9 card indeed until DX10 cards have been proven in real world tests. I would go for the 512Mb version of that card.

I also imagine that when you come to upgrade again, you will find it easier to sell it with Vista as an OS than XP. Because it will probably be a couple of years before you come to sell it, and it all honesty most people will be using Vista by that point (myself included - despite my protests - ah well).

I would purchase Home Premium OEM. You would need to upgrade your Mobo 3 times for it to be cost affective to purchase RETAIL. But then you don't have an OS to sell with your machine if you buy Retail.

So my honest advice to you (putting aside my personal preferences) would be to purchase Vista Home Premium OEM any day over XP. Just check that your new hardware is fully compatible. (I would choose an ATI graphics card over nVidia for Vista - because ATI drivers are far superior than nVidia's and you can do HDR and AA on ATI's DX9 cards)

Well, he did not really 'upgrade' but just got a new laptop for the project he's working in. Still has old laptop, but its hard to lag around 2 you see :(

kool, al probs get a new mobo, av got a radeon x1950pro and it working great, al probs get vista home premium from OCUK. My next decision will be to upgrade from a pentium D (3.4GHz) to a core 2 or get another gig of ram (already hav 1).
