Ok so I bought a laptop last week just to use as I'm moving back to Australia at the end of September. I didn't want to be without a PC when my desktop is taken by the removalists next week. 6 weeks without email, internet etc etc plus the 4 weeks travelling through the USA was not going to happen.

So I thought when I get to Oz I shall sell the laptop and may as well get one with Vista as it will be easier to sell. After all, people always want the latest and greatest.

I'm now starting to think I should have stayed with XP.

Can anyone tell me the reason why the new Windows Email won't allow you to use set it up with a Hotmail account like Outlook or Outlook Express ? Surely there must be a good reason that at present I don't know of.

I tried to set it up and it directed me to set up a Windows Live Email account. Again, why ? I have a Hotmail account that I pay for in order to use with Outlook Express ?

is it just me ? Have I missed something very simple or have Microsoft lost the plot ?

Cheers

my point is that you cannot use Windows Mail to download your Hotmail anymore.... when you try and set it up it tells you that it cannot use HTTP email......

anyone know why ?

HTTP mail functionality is not included in the built in mail client, the world is full of people that cry "monopoly and unfair to the competition" so the built in client has to have reduced capabilities.

A fully featured version is available as a download (hence you could choose another program instead if you wanted to) at Click here

It's the same madness that the EEC used to force MS to release a version of XP with media player removed, at exactly the same price as the version with it included.

All very silly, people have brains and if they want to use or try a different brand of email client/music player they will, irrespective of the built in one. It's another example of "the state knows best, we're all obviously too thick to work out there are alternatives oursleves"...

/rant :D

Hope that helps.

ok that's the explanation I wanted, cheers

so with that download does the Windows Live Mail run as a seperate application or still via Internet Explorer ?

and does it allow you to use an old Hotmail account ?

It's an offline mail reader the same as Outlook express was although with a new UI, more bells and whistles etc. You can still access your hotmail via the web if you want to.

Hotmail is in effect just being rebranded live mail and having features and an updated ui added to the web access. Try mail.live.com, you chould be able to access you hotmail the same as always
