Vista Windows Mail - Backing Up

Up until now everything was going well with Vista but here's a problem I haven't seen before.

I wanted to backup my emails so I clicked on File->Export->Messages and then selected "Microsoft Windows Mail" and backed these up to folder on the local C: drive. So far so good.

I then tried copying the newly created backup folder to a USB2 stick, a SD card and my Bufallo NAS and for each the the whole process stalls and only shows "calculating remaining time...".

Strangely I can copy the backup folder to a local partition HDD on the same laptop but any removeable/network drive fails!

I think something is screwy with the export as I don't seem to able to export directly to anywhere but the local HDD either.

Any ideas?

Why not just copy the entire Windows Mail folder to the removable media?

It can be found in:

C:\Users\xxxxx\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail\Local Folders\

DAS -Have you tried it yourself? The "Local Folders" content is the problem.

Try copying it to a network share. If you don't have one then try a USB stick.

I got around it by exporting to my C:\ drive and then zipping the backup. I then copy this to my network share without problem.

I'm not on a network. but have successfully copied it to a USB stick in the past. Just for good measure, I tried it again just now. As with many Vista copying exercises, it wasn't as quick as in XP, but it still copied 932 messages across 7 folders in a few minutes.

Thanks for trying it out. Eventually it appears to start copying to my USB stick but at 13 bytes per second. Really.

No idea what is happening here. Other files write Ok. Very odd...

The info in the links hasn't really helped from what I've tried so far.

I have a dual boot system with XP, so I rebooted into XP and copied the Vista Mail folders to my network at the usual high speed.

So, there definately seems to be some problem with Vista in some situations.

I can copy large files OK (so far anyway) - It seems to be when I copy 1000's of small files.
